MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (AP) -- Ten students at Middle Tennessee State University will go to Japan this summer to help victims of the earthquake, tsunami and nuclear accident last year.
They will witness firsthand the impact of the Fukushima disaster and help clean up and rebuild facilities and prepare meals.
The trip is tentatively planned for June 5-15 with support from the Japanese Ministry of Education, Fukushima University and MTSU International Affairs. Students were chosen from a group of applicants and are paying $1,000 each to cover expenses.
A news release from the university said students would not be going to areas where the U.S. government has recommended citizens avoid travel.
