MONEY? News ? Internet Marketing Jobs on the Rise According to ...

Simi Valley, California (PRWEB) October 27, 2012

Internet marketing might be a new phrase to the average person, but it is no surprise to those earning six figure salaries from this industry. The InternetMarketingCoaching.co website has reviewed new jobs data that has revealed the growth in Internet marketing jobs online. A new training program is available that is accessible through the Internet Marketing Coaching website that is designed to teach beginners and advanced marketers the Internet marketing strategies that are being used to earn full-time salaries. This training can be accessed right here and is available entirely online through any Internet connected device.

Job statistics in the United States are released each month by independent agencies to help judge the growth of the economy. Many positions are added and taken away as the demand for these jobs increases or decreases. What started out as blogging for many people has now turned into a full-time career as Internet marketers.

Some former bloggers that have turned into Internet marketers have reported six figure salaries from working entirely online. The new training series accessed through the InternetMarketingCoaching.co website provides the information that individuals, business owners, website owners and others can use to earn income online through this job field.

While no formal hiring takes place for many Internet marketers, the ability to market products as well as services of other companies takes little more than a standard application.

?Affiliate marketing requires no product or service startup money,? said Brian Hanson, co-owner of Marketer?s Black Book. ?Affiliate marketing training is usually all that someone needs to get started earning money from simple promotion of established products and services online,? Hanson added.

As a full-time Internet marketer, Brian Hanson helps to train Internet marketers in part through his company?s YouTube page available at this link. This free training as well as the training that is now offered through the InternetMarketingCoaching.co website are two resources that those wanting to become Internet marketers can use online.

While blogging and affiliate marketing represent two routine jobs Internet marketers complete, more specific jobs of these marketers are also completed that contribute to monthly and annual income generation. Product creation is one way that Internet marketers use to earn income.

The creation and sale of unique products like e-books, audio books and other informational products is included in the opportunities available to Internet marketers online. The InternetMarketingCoaching.co website provides product creation information as well as digital marketing strategies to reach buyers online.

For individual workers, learning the skills of an Internet marketer could provide a way to earn online income in place of or in combination with a career path. For companies and website owners, performing the strategies used by Internet marketers could increase website traffic as well as increase e-commerce income online.

About InternetMarketingCoaching.co

The InternetMarketingCoaching.co website is one online resource that business owners and website owners use to get access to helpful training programs of Internet marketing. The coaches that own and operate this website are successful Internet marketers that are now providing access to useful training online. The training programs that are now accessible on the InternetMarketingCoaching.co website include some of the same information that these website owners use to earn full-time salaries online. The InternetMarketingCoaching.co website was launched in 2012.

Dead or Alive: Is SEO vs. PPC Really a Debate? | Business 2 ...

OK, so you?ve seen this before?many, many times before?and you certainly can expect to see it again. It?s the age-old debate of whether or not businesses should invest the majority of their online marketing budget toward search engine optimization, pay per click or both.

Small businesses understand the fundamental challenges that go hand in hand with SEO, the ever-changing Google algorithms, and the threat of Penguins and Pandas chomping down on your site? affecting your rankings and, as a result, the livelihood of your business. Meanwhile, PPC poses as the ?quick fix? for a company, right, with measured results right at your fingertips?

According to Larry Kim of Wordstream.com, there are some in the SEO community that believe PPC is an ?addiction in the marketing world,? others that believe PPC is more of a useful tool to help better your SEO initiative, as well as others that believe SEO and PPC work best together.

?In the end, isn?t PPC just becoming an easier, more prominent, and more effective form of inbound marketing? And if so, why not embrace it with both arms open,? Kim wrote. ?And isn?t this better than worrying about what zoo creature Google will unleash upon us next??

While Kim is a strong believer in PPC being the end-all-be-all for small business online, companies have and continue to utilize SEO, PPC or a mixture of both, depending on the long- and short-term goals of a business.

With a little help from marketing specialist Gary J. Nix of Blue Fountain Media, as well as Craig Kilgore, an inbound marketing manager at Mainstreethost, this post will attempt to put to rest some of the common misconceptions regarding SEO and PPC, and offer small business owners a bit of expert advice when it comes to their online marketing initiatives.

The death of SEO or PPC ?

First things first: is SEO or PPC dead? It seems no matter where you look, or what topic you are searching, something is either dead or dying. Kim?s Wordstream research suggests that PPC is the way to go. Google ads account for 64.6 percent of clicks for ?high commercial intent keyword searches.? That?s nearly two-thirds of all product-buying clicks going to sponsored, paid results.

Courtesy of Swellpath.com

?I think I?ve read at least one article in regards to every area of digital marketing, and if I were to believe the titles, everything would be dead,? Nix said. ?Nothing is dying. Things tend to change, many times for the better. But no tactic in digital marketing is dead.?

Furthermore, any clever marketer will find the appropriate and effective way to reach their audiences, whether it?s through SEO or PPC, Kilgore said.

?Technologies constantly evolve and areas in which we can market are always growing,? Kilgore said. ?I doubt that we will ever see Google and Bing require every site to be a paid listing, so until that time comes, SEO isn?t going anywhere?and vice versa.?

Avoid those darned Google creatures

Google?s latest Penguin update brought the hammer down on websites, including legitimate websites, fairly hard. The update targeted websites that were ?over-optimized,? or those that have employed and benefited from black hat SEO tactics.

Courtesy of Mike Biondo, Mainstreethost

Would it be more beneficial for small business owners to allocate the majority of their marketing budget to PPC, as opposed to organic, particularly if their site has suffered from these updates?

?First and foremost, if your site has been negatively affected to any extent, you?re going to want to develop a ?cleanup? strategy,? Kilgore said.

Regardless if it?s low-quality backlinks or crappy content, if your company isn?t willing to repair the issue at hand and seek a solution by developing higher quality content, ?you will continue to find yourself in damage-control mode to where neither SEO nor PPC will be a viable or effective option,? he said.

Take the right approach

Of course, if you?re searching for short-term success, allocating your budget toward PPC is the way to go. That short-term value, in addition to valuable, accurate statistics from those ad campaigns, makes PPC worth every penny.

However, what are your business? goals? Certainly if you?re unsure of the direction your business is going in, it?s exceedingly challenging to plan, execute and measure an SEO or PPC campaign.

?I have an extensive amount of experience dealing with small businesses both on the SEO and PPC side of things,? Kilgore said. ?I?m somewhat biased toward SEO, but I strongly feel that when done properly through planning, execution and measurement, SEO is the answer for small business the majority of the time. It?s much more cost-effective?most of the time?and provides longer term value.?

Of course, there are multiple factors that decide whether or not PPC or SEO is better for a company, including the type of business and its desired results. Goals, budget, search volume, keyword term costs, keyword term completion, CPC (cost per click) vs. CPM (cost per impression) and landing pages all factor in when determining what the best route is for your business, Nix said.

?Unfortunately, there?s no magic bullet,? Nix said. ?You have to look at the business and your strategy and decide from there.?

The never ending debate?

So SEOs and digital marketers continue to vehemently debate which tactic reigns supreme. There are benefits to both, and maximized results will be determined by a number of aforementioned factors.

PPC has instant results, according to Oli Gardner of Unbounce, while SEO?s return on investment will continue to surge long after PPC has peaked. His study suggests that 86 percent of web searchers trust organic listings more than paid ads, while roughly half of web searchers aren?t even aware of the difference between the two.

Courtesy of SEOMoz

But are we closing in on a time where one method is actually the clear-cut choice over the other, 100 percent of the time? Or will they always work hand and hand?

?If there was only one way to do things,? Nix said, ?this question would not exist. Generally speaking, because as I say, nothing in marketing is 100 percent, an integrated approach is the one that works best. This holds true for digital marketing techniques, traditional marketing techniques and the numerous permutations for techniques in both approaches.?

?Personally, I wouldn?t even consider it a debate,? Kilgore said. ?One approach might work better for Business A and the other might work better for Business B. ? There will never be a clear-cut choice and I would argue that both SEO and PPC can be executed effectively and simultaneously regardless of the business and the business goals.?

Russian investigators raid defense firm in fraud probe

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russian investigators raided the offices of a defense ministry firm on Thursday and opened five cases of fraud against the company, stepping up a crackdown on multi-billion dollar corruption in the defense industry.

The investigative committee said 3 billion roubles ($96 million) were missing from the budget of state-owned military contractor Oboronservis, which it blamed on officials selling property to commercial firms at prices below the market rate.

Russia is the world's second largest arms exporter, and its defense industry has been strengthened by President Vladimir Putin's plans to increase spending to modernize the military.

But the sector is plagued by corruption. Last year chief military prosecutor Sergei Fridinsky said a fifth of the state's defense budget was stolen each year by crooked officials, generals and contractors - an annual theft of around $10 billion.

"Today, as part of the criminal cases, investigators are conducting searches and seizures of documents at Oboronservis, (and) questioning the officials," the Investigative Committee said in a statement on its website on Thursday.

Defense Minister Anatoly Serdyukov, who served as chairman of board of directors at Oboronservis until 2011, was present at the firm's offices as the raid took place and offered his support to investigators, Interfax news agency reported.

Putin appointed Serdyukov as defense minister following his return to the Kremlin in May, with a remit to overhaul the armed forces and restructure the bloated defense industry. Russia's investigative committee, often referred to as the Russian FBI, answers directly to Putin.

"Any public announcements about the size of the losses and the participation of any officials of the holding Oboronservis, are no more than potential scenarios until the investigation is complete," Interfax reported Serdyukov as saying.

Oboronservis, which was created in September 2008, is responsible for ensuring all the needs of the Russian army are met - from heavy machinery to food and educational materials.

Russia allocated more than 1.5 trillion roubles ($48 billion) for national defense in its 2011 budget, and Putin last year promised to inject the defense budget with 23 trillion roubles ($734 billion) over the next decade.

Feeling hot, hot, hot: Climate shapes distribution and movement of humans as it does other animals

ScienceDaily (Oct. 24, 2012) ? We're not used to thinking of ourselves as animals. But as Jason Samson sees it, climate is as important in shaping the distribution and movement of humans as it is in other animals. The McGill-trained ecologist and fellow researchers have been using modeling techniques similar to those used to define the ecological niche for plant and animal species to explore the correlation between climate patterns and population growth in the contiguous United States between 1900-2000. And what they discovered was a pronounced population shift away from areas within the U.S. with cool and seasonal climates, towards those areas that are warmer and drier year-round, and they found that this was the case even when it meant moving further away from agricultural lands.

By using census data and information about weather patterns (temperature and rainfall) gathered from the nearly 3 000 counties in the U.S. over the course of the century, Samson and his colleagues were able to show the predominant importance of the correlation between climate and demographic growth. Moreover, in the study just published in PLOS ONE, the researchers found that population growth was more correlated with climate than income, urbanization or food production.

The researchers found that the average American today not only lives in a drier environment than they did a century ago, but that they have also experienced a temperature increase of over 1.5? Celsius or 2.7? Fahrenheit over the last century. That represents a six-fold increase compared to the temperature change across the US during the same time period.

More and more Americans now live in the warm southern belt of the country that extends from California to Florida, and includes cities such as San Diego, Austin (the third largest growing city in the nation between 2000-2006) and Tampa. The researchers also point to the fact that demographic growth in these warmer and drier climates within the country, and the trend towards urbanization and agglomeration, has been happening at an accelerating pace over the course of the twentieth century, and is particularly noticeable within the last thirty years.

Although the researchers were able to show such a significant correlation between climate and demographic growth, they caution against thinking of climate as a strong predictive factor in determining population movements. They also caution that this concentration of population in warm, dry areas is likely to have a significant effect on human well-being in these locations due to monetary, and environmental factors (such as growing size and intensity of heat islands, increasing stress on limited water supplies, and the high cost of using air conditioning). And they suggest that policy makers may be well advised to consider this information as they plan for the future given the context of global climate change.

Traumatic consequences long after fall of the Berlin Wall

ScienceDaily (Oct. 25, 2012) ? One in three former political prisoners of the German Democratic Republic (GDR) still suffers from sleeping disorders, nightmares and irrational fear. Professor Andreas Maercker from the University of Zurich and PD Matthias Sch?tzwohl from Dresden University of Technology reveal these post-traumatic stress disorders in a study -- the first to examine the post-traumatic consequences in former political prisoners over a period of 15 years.

Previously, there had been a lack of reliable data in Germany on the long-term psychological consequences of political imprisonment in the GDR. Professor Andreas Maercker, Head of the Department of Psychopathology and Clinical Intervention at the University of Zurich, and private lecturer Dr. Matthias Sch?tzwohl, Group Leader at the Clinic and Polyclinic of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy at Dresden University of Technology, interviewed 146 former political prisoners in the mid-1990s. 15 years later, they studied the majority of those concerned (78 men and 15 women) again.

"To our surprise, post-traumatic stress disorder is still present in a third of the people studied," says Professor Maercker, summing up the results. "While some have recovered compared to 15 years ago, in others the stress disorder has only manifested itself in recent years." In all, such a delayed or recurrent post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) was apparent in 15 percent. We know from studies from other countries -- mostly on prisoners of war or other victims of violence -- that delayed or recurrent PTSD exists, albeit to a lesser extent. Maercker and Sch?tzwohl's study is the first to demonstrate this for former political prisoners. It appears in the journal Nervenarzt and additional analyses are to be published in the English-language journal Torture.

Decline in dependency on addictive substances

Other psychological disorders that former GDR prisoners suffered from decreased during the 15 years. Specific phobias such as claustrophobia were less common, for instance. The number of people addicted to alcohol and medication also fell. However, the number with acute depression quadrupled to 41 percent of those studied last year. At both time points, a more or less equal number suffered from anxiety disorders such as panic disorder (24 percent last year).

"We made another key discovery: Those affected tend to rate their own psychological condition after their release too poorly in retrospect but their current state more realistically," says PD Sch?tzwohl. From this, the authors conclude that there is no distortion of memory for the purposes of a current desire for compensation, for instance, but rather that psychological factors play a role in the tendency towards a negative life evaluation.

The Paleolithic Diet: So easy a caveman once did it

With the amount of sugary, processed foods loaded with chemical additives that an American consumes on a daily basis, the US has been dubbed one of the most obese countries in the world. Our bodies were not meant to consume the genetically engineered produce that is found in the supermarkets, or the high amount of sugar replacements that are lurking in diet foods- which is why many professionals in the fitness industry have embraced The
Paleolithic Diet.

The primary idea of the diet is to revert back to the eating habits from the Paleolithic Period-when pasta, sugary foods, and processed goods were not staple foods. Therefore, the objective of the diet is to eat only what our ancestors, the cavemen, did. This means lots of meat, fish, poultry, vegetables,
fruits, and nuts. Because of its high protein and fiber content, this is not a diet plagued by hunger pangs. The Paleolithic diet claims to improve overall health and fitness, thus making one less susceptible to diseases.

The diet claims make the benefits sound fantastic, but many health experts would disagree that there are truth to its claims. ?We are not under the same
conditions that our ancestors had to face and it is not realistic to eat like they did,? Nutritionist Tammy Darke said. ?Cavemen had to hunt buying the meats and nuts and seeds from a grocery store.? Also, we didn?t see common diseases in cavemen that we see today partly because we live longer, allowing cardiovascular disease and cancer to develop in our aging bodies.? This is not to say that the idea of the Paleolithic Diet is not admirable, or even ineffective to use as an inspiration to healthy eating. ?I do think that done correctly, which would take considerable time and planning, this diet can be somewhat healthy by encouraging less processed foods and more natural foods that are prepared at home,? Darke said. ?It also encourages more fruits and vegetables with less added sodium and sugar.?

While the Paleolithic Diet is not exactly a weight loss diet, some do lose weight on it initially. This is because while losing out on many grain products, the high calorie butter spreads are lost as well. Exercise on the diet is recommended, for there should not be a shortage of energy and the health risks are miniscule, which is not to say they don not exist.

Health experts caution on the diet?s high fat content and point out that by excluding dairy and grains from the many nutrients are left out as well, such as calcium, Vitamin D and B, folate, omega-3s and potentially carbohydrates if enough fruits are not consumed. Another drawback to this diet is the boomerang effect you get from restricting yourself from certain foods. Once you have a cheat day or decide to eat the things you stopped eating when on the diet again you crave those particular items. This is somewhat impeding on the idea of long-term weight loss.

The Paleolithic Diet is, however, promoted by many exercise programs and is noted to be more nutritionally beneficial than the Mediterranean Diet, but not as effective as other healthy diets, such as the Volumetric Diet.

Watch Felix Baumgartner Live: This Scientific Discovery Brought To You By Mentos, The Freshmaker

astroAs I watch today's jump by Felix Baumgartner - it's been running non-stop on most major news channels, the same channels that gave a Space Shuttle launch about two minutes between video of a talking dog and what Kim Kardashian just ate - I'm struck by the notion that what we're seeing, albeit in an Evel Knievel kind of way, is the future of scientific discovery.

Is Libya terrorist attack 'debacle' hurting Obama?

The White House and the Obama campaign are under fire for the administration's handling of the terrorist attack on the US consulate in Benghazi, Libya, that killed the US ambassador and three other embassy personnel. The Romney campaign is attacking Obama on the issue.

The first question in the vice presidential debate this week ? the one that is becoming most troublesome for the Obama-Biden ticket ? was about Libya and the deadly attack on the US consulate in Benghazi.

The essence of the query to Vice President Joe Biden was as old as Watergate: ?What did you know and when did you know it??

That is, shouldn?t you have anticipated the possibility of a terrorist attack, especially on the anniversary of 9/11 when US Ambassador Christopher Stevens made what turned out to be a fatal visit to Benghazi, an area known to include Al Qaeda sympathizers?

And why did the administration persist in describing the attack that killed Ambassador Stevens and three other embassy personnel as tied to protests across the region to a crude anti-Islam YouTube video ? protests, as UN Ambassador Susan Rice said some days later, that "seems to have been hijacked ? by some individual clusters of extremists who came with heavier weapons.?

IN PICTURES:?Libya's critical transition

As it turns out, there were no protests tied to the offensive video, and the attack by terrorists seems obviously to have been pre-planned and well-executed against a lightly-defended facility. What?s more, according to congressional testimony this past week, requests for beefed-up security had been made to the State Department.

Mr. Biden?s answer to debate moderator Martha Raddatz: ?We weren?t told they wanted more security there. We did not know they wanted more security.?

But as Washington Post fact checker Glenn Kessler reported Friday, ?Biden?s bold statement was directly contradicted by State Department officials just this week, in testimony before a congressional panel and in?unclassified cables released by a congressional committee.?

?All of us at post were in sync that we wanted these resources,? said Eric Nordstrom, the top regional security officer in Libya earlier this year. A Utah National Guardsman who led a security team, Lt. Col. Andrew Wood, said: ?We felt great frustration that those requests were ignored or just never met.?

The story changed, Biden tried to explain, as more information became available.

?We said exactly what the intelligence community told us that they knew,? Biden said. ?That was the assessment. And as the intelligence community changed their view, we made it clear they changed their view.?

That is probably true, and it?s no doubt true that security at diplomatic facilities around the world is handled by the State Department, not the White House.

Still, the buck stops with the president. And Obama no doubt will be faced with the same kind of questioning Biden was when he meets Mitt Romney for the second presidential debate ? to be held this coming Tuesday in town hall format and scheduled to include questions on foreign policy and national security.

CASTLE ROCK, Colo. (CBS4)- An explosion destroyed a home in Castle Rock early Friday morning. Investigators believe it was caused by a natural gas leak.

Neighbors were shaken when they heard the explosion at about 7:18 a.m. The explosion happened at 6942 Sulfur Lane in Castle Rock.

The family of Denver Police Lt. Jimmy Martinez lived in the home that was destroyed. His wife, Lisa, and and their children, Elen, 6, Oz, 4, and Ashbie, 11 were watching television on the second floor when the explosion happened.

?They were all watching television when all of a sudden the house just blew up. They don?t know what happened,? said Martinez.

They were rushed to Swedish Medical Center where they are all doing well except for being shaken up and suffering a few cuts and bruises.

Martinez was working when the home exploded.

?I actually thought it was a joke at first but that obviously was not the case,? said Martinez. ?I?m just thankful that we?re all alive. I have everyone here today.?

The children, the youngest of the family, were adopted from Ethiopia. The girls have been with the family for about six months and the boys have been in the home about a year and a half.

?We were all just in there trying to get the kids out and all the mothers were over at our house washing off the kids, trying to get them warm, wrapping them in blankets. Everyone was trying to pitch in, help out,? said neighbor Kyle Albert.

The family has four other children, ages 25, 23, 23 and 18 who no longer live at the home.

Another son, Ryan, 16, would normally have been sleeping in the basement but the family is thankful he was at a friend?s house Thursday night and was not home when the explosion happened.

What caused the natural gas leak is being investigated by Black Hills Energy.

There was minor damage to some of the surrounding homes.

A fund has been set up to help the Martinez family at the Rocky Mountain Law Enforcement Credit Union.

My conversations with Malala Yousafzai, the girl who stood up to the Taliban (+video)

Pakistani journalist Owais Tohid recalls his conversations with Malala Yousafzai, the outspoken 14-year-old girl whose shooting by the Taliban has outraged the world.

"Which one of you is Malala? Speak up, otherwise I will shoot you all," a hooded, bearded Taliban militant asked a bus full of schoolgirls on their way home earlier this week. "She is propagating against the soldiers of Allah, the Taliban. She must be punished," the Taliban militant shouted louder. Then, recognizing her, he shot her at a point blank range.

Travis Brecher reports.

Malala Yousafzai gained fame when it came out that she was the girl who was highly critical of the Taliban's ban on girls' education in the Swat valley, and blogging about her views and about the atrocities of Islamic militias controlling the valley from 2007-2009. The BBC blog, which was written in Urdu under a pen name, was nominated for several awards.?

"I wanted to scream, shout and tell the whole world what we were going through. But it was not possible. The Taliban would have killed me, my father, my whole family. I would have died without leaving any mark. So I chose to write with a different name. And it worked, as my valley has been freed," she told me when I invited her for an interview for the TV station I am heading now, ARY News.?

Doctors treating Malala now say bullets have been removed from her head and neck, but her condition is still critical. The Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) have claimed responsibility for the attack and have a $100,000 government bounty against them. ?

Malala's friend, Shazia, who was also injured that day, recounted the event to me as her eyes filled with tears.

"They stopped our school van. They were riding on a bike. The masked man kept pointing guns at us and the other was shouting ?where is Malala?!? I froze with a flashback to the old dark days: I remembered the headless bodies, slaughtering of rivals ? merely on dissent or slightest doubt of spying ?the grotesque violence."

Just a few moments before, she said, the girls had been singing a traditional Pashtun folk song on their way back from school, its lyrics professing to sacrifice life for motherland, the beautiful valley of Swat.

"With a drop of my sweetheart's blood, Shed to defend the motherland, I will put a beauty spot on my forehead, Such would put to shame the rose in the garden," they sang. The song was made famous by Malala?s namesake, Malalai of Maiwand. The 19th century national folk hero fought against the British troops in the Second Anglo-Afghan War.

What's in a name?

The first time I met Malala, a couple of years ago, I asked her what her name signified. She answered:?"Probably, a hero like the Afghan heroine Malalai [of Maiwand] or Malalai Joya. I want to be a social activist and an honest politician like her," she said, smiling. Ms. Joya, a 30-something activist, politician, and writer who was bitterly critical of both the Taliban and the Karzai regime, was at one point dubbed the bravest woman of Afghanistan.?

(AP) ? It was an ad campaign conceived as eye candy to bring attention to other advertisements in New York's transit system. But the "Meet Miss Subways" beauty contest posters of pretty young New York women and their aspirations quickly evolved into a popular and even groundbreaking fixture that ran for 35 years, from 1941 to 1976.

When photographer Fiona Gardner first learned about it she "immediately wanted to know what happened to all the women."

She set out to find out.

The result is "Meet Miss Subways: New York's Beauty Queens 1941-76," an exhibition at the New York Transit Museum running Oct. 23-March 25, and a companion book of the same name.

The contest reflected an evolving America. When it was launched, the war already was changing the role of women. From 1952 to 1962, the contest featured schoolteachers, stewardesses and suburban housewives; the next 10 years saw secretaries and airplane pilots.

The first African-American was crowned Miss Subways in 1948 ? long before Vanessa Williams was named Miss America in 1984 ? and the first Asian-American was honored in 1949.

"It was the first integrated and ethnically diverse beauty contest in America," representing working-class women, said Gardner, who was born the year the contest ended. "I realized I had stumbled on a piece of forgotten New York history."

Her interest was piqued in 2004 after seeing some of the original posters on the walls of Ellen's Stardust Diner, whose owner Ellen Hart Strum was crowned Miss Subways in 1959. The winners' future dreams were listed along with their headshots; many wanted to be models or singers, while others yearned to travel ? "Europe four times, no less," read the Miss Subways poster of Maureen Walsh Roaldsen in 1968. The first Miss Subways, Mona Freeman, even went on to become a movie star after being discovered by Howard Hughes.

But for most, the subway placard was their only moment in the spotlight, and finding the former winners was a challenge for Gardner. The contest archives were lost. Many of the women had married and changed their names, some had moved, still others had died.

She searched the Internet, voter registration and municipal archives and even hired a private eye. With journalist Amy Zimmer, she tracked down 146 Miss Subways posters and interviewed 41 winners in person. Together they collaborated on the book, with Gardner taking the women's portraits wearing their Miss Subways sashes at home or at work.

"Many of these women are very interesting and have accomplished many things. You realize there's a much more complex story behind the headshots. Many of them went back and had second and third careers," said Gardner.

Marcia Kilpatrick Hocker's dream to study with the Negro Ensemble Company repertory theater came true. She auditioned after becoming Miss Subways in 1975, calling the contest "very confidence-boosting."

"I'm basically very shy. ... I didn't know I would be representing Miss Subways at various functions, speaking at kickoff events, addressing school groups," the 65-year-old Hocker said in a telephone interview from Gresham, Ore., where she now lives.

She wanted to be Miss Subways because she "wanted to be discovered. I wanted to do commercials and be an actress," Hocker said.

She married an American diplomat in 1981 and lived for a time in Colombia and New Zealand. She put her talents to use, singing at embassy functions and coaching American children in drama. For the past 11 years, she's been a DJ at Jazz Radio KMHD in Portland.

For the first 22 years, winners were selected by the John Robert Powers modeling agency and the New York Subways Advertising Company. Afterward, it became a more democratic contest, with straphangers voting via postcard for their favorite finalist.

Changing times including the women's movement, the city's fiscal crisis and rampant graffiti in the transit system brought an end to the contest.

Only 17 when she won, Strum's poster said she wanted to pursue an acting career and devote all her spare time to acting, singing and speech lessons.

"For a while I was known as the national anthem singer," the 71-year-old said. In the 1980s Strum sang The Star-Spangled Banner for the Knicks and Rangers games as one of Madison Square Garden's rotating singers. She also sang at official city functions.

She married and had two sons. Her retro 1950s-themed restaurant opened in 1987, featuring singing waiters and 70 Miss Subways posters. She also stages Miss Subways reunions at the diner.

Roaldsen, 67, a 1968 winner, is coming to the next one Nov. 13 for the book's launch party.

She was 23 and working as a secretary at Downstate Medical Center when she won. On weekends, she greeted VIPs and celebrities at the Diamond Club at Shea Stadium.

As Miss Subways she represented New York. Among the perks was attending Richard Nixon's inauguration and going to the premier of "Finian's Rainbow" at the Ziegfeld Theatre, where she briefly met Fred Astaire.

She married and continued to travel, her passion. In her 40s she launched a new career as an attorney for the New York State Appellate Court.

It wasn't a real beauty contest, said Hocker. "It was about a well-groomed young woman who in addition to wanting to be a wife and mom, had aspirations to do something to contribute to the community at large."

U.S. foreclosures at lowest level in five years: RealtyTrac

(Reuters) - Foreclosure filings on U.S. homes in September fell to their lowest level in five years, but some states are still seeing their foreclosures rise, a report from RealtyTrac said on Thursday.

The overall decrease put the combined number of reported default notices, scheduled auctions, and bank repossessions at 180,427 - the lowest total since July 2007. That's also 7 percent less than August' s foreclosure rate, and down 16 percent from September 2011.

"The five-year low, combined with the fact that the year-over-year decrease in foreclosures was in its twenty-fourth straight month, is evidence that we're past the worst of foreclosure crisis," said Daren Blomquist, vice president of RealtyTrac.

September's decreased foreclosure activity helped drop foreclosures for the third quarter down to the lowest level since the fourth quarter of 2007.

Foreclosure starts - initial default notices or scheduled auctions - were down 12 percent nationwide in September from August, and decreased in 31 states.

The news is not universally good. Fewer foreclosure starts, said Blomquist, could mean an increase in short sales. Short sales, which take place before a home is formally repossessed, can drag down housing prices by increasing supply.

Still, Blomquist said, short sales are "still the lesser evil: foreclosures tend to sell at even lower prices."

And some states - particularly those that make lenders go through the courts to foreclose on properties - registered a year-over-year increase in the number of foreclosures in the third quarter because they are still dealing with a backlog.

The average number of days it took lenders to foreclose hit a record 382 days overall.

"Much of the downward trend is good news, but part of it is exaggerated by the fact that it's taking longer to foreclose, which automatically reduces the foreclosure numbers," said Blomquist. "A longer process means a bit less pain in the short-term, but it means it takes longer for the housing market to fully rid itself of the foreclosure albatross."

Only four states with non-judicial foreclosure rules registered an increase in activity in the third quarter. Washington state saw a 70 percent increase from the previous quarter, and was up 15 percent from the third quarter of 2011.

Florida, a judicial state, ranked highest in the nation in September and the third quarter for the first time since 2005. One in 117 Florida housing units had a foreclosure filing in the third quarter, more than twice the national average of one in 248 housing units.

HBT: Reds should sit shaky Rolen for Game 4

As costly as it was, Scott Rolen?s second error of the NLDS, which scored the go-ahead run as the Reds lost in 10 innings, isn?t reason alone to stick him on the bench against San Francisco?s Barry Zito in Wednesday?s Game 4 in Cincinnati. But it doesn?t need to be.

In Todd Frazier, the Reds have a third baseman who posted an OPS 200 points higher than Rolen did against lefties this season. Rolen came in at .234 with one homer in 77 at-bats against southpaws. Frazier hit .298 with six homers in 124 at-bats.

Meanwhile, Rolen?s poor September has carried over to the postseason, as he?s opened the series against San Francisco 2-for-11. Frazier struggled during the season?s final month, too, but he outhit Rolen over the rest of the year.?As a third baseman, he?ll never be confused with prime Rolen. But then neither will the 37-year-old version of Rolen manning the hot corner right now.

The Reds don?t need to make a permanent Rolen-for-Frazier switch at third. It?s doubtful Dusty Baker would even entertain the thought. Still, plugging in Frazier against the lefty in the second of three possible games in three days makes plenty of sense. The Reds managed Rolen?s playing time carefully all year anyway, and the lineup could use Frazier?s extra pop.

Pope marks 50th anniversary of Vatican II

VATICAN CITY (AP) ? Pope Benedict XVI is marking the 50th anniversary of the Second Vatican Council, the church meetings he attended as a young priest that brought the Catholic Church into the modern world but whose meaning is still hotly debated.

Benedict was celebrating Mass on Thursday in St. Peter's Square and later will greet churchmen, including a dozen original Vatican II participants, re-enacting the great procession into St. Peter's that launched the council in 1962.

The anniversary comes as the church, beset by recent scandals, is fighting what it sees as a wave of secularism erasing the Christian heritage of the West and competition for souls from rival evangelical churches in Latin America and Africa.

The pope has spent much of his pontificate seeking to correct what he considers the misinterpretation of Vatican II.
