We are back from our brief break! In this week?s review, Iranian organizations and individuals receive awards for their work on HIV/AIDS while Mississippi doctors try to fix healthcare inequalities by learning from Iran and Iran?s Supreme Leader puts an end to family planning. The Unveil a Woman?s Right to Unveil goes from Facebook to the streets of Iran, residents in Neyshapour take to the streets to protest inflation, and a report shows the lopsided impact of economic sanctions on women. A group of citizens cleans a park in Isfahan and the loss of Iranian identity is lamented.

?Unveil Women?s Right to Unveil? Reaches Iran?s Streets? (Click to tweet)

The ?Unveil the Right to Unveil? campaign is still underway. Many have joined in sending their photos and the message of the campaign has now reached the streets inside Iran. A recent post on the official page of the campaign shows wall graffiti in the city of Bojnord in North Eastern Iran that reads:

Free Hijab, Iranian Women?s Right?

Source: Unveil the Right to Unveil campaign page on Facebook. This photo is said to have been taken in the city of Bojnord from the entrance of a girls? high school.

In an interview with Arseh Sevom (in Persian) the journalist Masih Alinejad and campaign developer Sahar Rezazadeh discuss the campaign. They talk about its influence inside Iran and in the diaspora. They also ask women to share their stories of forced hijab. ?It?s a very important part of our history,? Alinejad states.

Me and my Free Dress

Following a request from Masih Alinejad that instead of only sending out photos women can share their stories of living through the mandatory hijab in Iran, the feminist campaign female = male / ?? = ??? asked their 137K followers to submit their experiences. Many women joined to share their memories of how they were affected and belittled on a daily basis by the proponents and enforcers of compulsory hijab. Exiled author, Ahoo Shokraie is one example. She recalls (our translation):

My mother did not let me and my sister wear a headscarf until the last days,? [when we reached puberty and had to observe the hijab]. It was my fear of the morals police headquartered at Vozara street or the craven looks in the eyes of other men that caused even my mother started to say, ?This dress is too tight.? My father would comment, ?This is too short? and my sister: ?Today is a religious holiday, don?t wear this one.? It wasn?t long before I reached the day when my own son, the grandchild of that woman who never sewed a headscarf for us, walked beside me and told me what to wear and how much my scarf could go back on my hairline.

Members of Dating Website Arrested

IRNA state news agency reports that seven members of what this agency describes as ?an unconventional dating website? have been arrested. The Iranian cyber police told IRNA that ?four of the detained people are under the age of 20.? The Iranian cyber police warned Iranian families that ?online dating is a new phenomenon spreading in Iran.? And families should ?have a close look at the activities of their children.?

Identity Crisis?

Mehr News Agency cites an education expert expressing concern over the alienation of Iranian students from their history and heritage. Morteza Nazari told Mehr, ?Textbooks lack the smallest reference to the glorious aspects of Iranian civilization and the undeniable contribution of the Iranian thoughout mankind.? He added, ?Contrary to all that has been said by the officials of the Ministry of Education, the role of families is more significant in familiarizing children with the history, culture, and civilization of Iranians than the national educational system and families will have to take matters in their own hands.?

Earlier in September 2009, the Ministry of Education announced, ?Kings will be gradually omitted from students? history books.?

Economic Sanctions Hurt Women

ICAN has published a report on the effects of economic sanctions on women in Iran, noting that women suffer in multiple ways because of the sanctions regime. The report states that economic sanctions inhibit the education of women, isolate Iranians from the international community, lead to increased violence against women linked to high levels of male?unemployment, and threaten Afghan refugees and their children.?(Read the report here ? pdf)

?We Didn?t Revolt for Chicken? (Click to tweet)

While long queues to buy chicken are epidemic in Iran, people in the city of Neyshabour took to the streets in protest; a video clip of the incident can be seen here.

In response, the general and revolutionary prosecutor of Neyshabour reportedly said, ?It is beneath the dignity of Neyshabouri people to protest in the streets, to chant slogans for one or two chickens? We didn?t revolt for bread and water [in 1979], and we are not bearing all the hardship now if anything happens, if things worsen.?

Prison Guard, a New Academic Major

Meanwhile, Iranian universities are to offer a new program called Prison guarding.

No More Family Planning, I Say (Click to tweet)

Reversing Iran?s traditionally progressive stance on family planning, Ayatollah Khamenei, the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic, has called for an abolishment of family planning laws. Khamenei is quoted as saying, ?Our country has the capacity to house double the current population.?

In response to his recent ruling, Shargh newspaper published a report stating that in Tehran the family planning budget has now been cut to zero. The opposition website Neda-ye Sabz-e Azadi [Iran Green Voice] posted the news of a ?Mothers Social Marketing Project? launched as a pilot plan in Tehran to facilitate population growth.

Learning from Iran (Click to tweet)

The New York Times published the piece, What Can Mississippi Learn From Iran?, about the common problems delivering healthcare to poor, rural families throughout Iran and in Mississippi. The article documents the efforts of Mississippi doctor, Aaron Shirley, to learn from Iran?s model of preventative care in rural areas, which has lessened gaps in access to healthcare among the rural and urbanized populations.

Romney courts donors before leaving Israel

JERUSALEM (AP) ? Having publicly pledged "a solemn duty and moral imperative" to protect Israel, Mitt Romney will spend his final hours in Jerusalem courting wealthy donors before heading to Poland, the final leg of a three-nation overseas tour designed to bolster the Republican presidential candidate's foreign policy credentials.

Romney is scheduled to host a Monday morning fundraiser at the luxurious King David Hotel with American citizens willing to pay at least $50,000 per person.

Standing on Israeli soil for the first time as the GOP's presumptive presidential nominee, Romney on Sunday declared Jerusalem to be the capital of the Jewish state and said the United States has promised never to "look away from our passion and commitment to Israel."

Romney's campaign says his trip abroad, which began in England last week, is aimed at improving the former Massachusetts governor's foreign policy experience through a series of meetings with foreign leaders. The candidate has largely avoided direct criticism of U.S. President Barack Obama while on foreign soil.

The Jerusalem fundraiser, however, is a political event that could raise millions of dollars for Romney's campaign fund. It marks at least the second finance event during his tour. The first, in London, attracted about 250 people to a $2,500 per person fundraiser.

Both presidential candidates have aggressively courted American donors living abroad, a practice that is legal and has been used for decades.

Several donors were among those gathered in Jerusalem for Romney's speech on Sunday.

Romney's declaration that Jerusalem is Israel's capital was keeping with claims made by Israeli governments for decades, even though the United States, like other nations, maintains its embassy in Tel Aviv. He did not say if he would order the embassy moved if he wins the White House, but strongly suggested so in a CNN interview.

His remarks on the subject during his speech drew a standing ovation from his audience, which included Sheldon Adelson, the American businessman who has promised to donate more than $100 million to help defeat Obama.

Adelson was among a several donors who flew to Israel for a day of sightseeing with Romney in addition to private meetings with top Israeli officials.

A group of donors also met with a top aide to President Benjamin Netanyahu, one donor said on the condition of anonymity to discuss private meetings. After the meeting, the donors toured other historical sites in Jerusalem.

Romney met with Netanyahu and other leaders before the speech. He also visited the Western Wall, Judaism's holiest site, where he was mobbed by worshippers. In addition, Romney met with Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad.

In his remarks, Romney steered clear of overt criticism of Obama, even though he said the threat of a nuclear-armed Iran "has only become worse" in the past five years.

In an unspoken rebuttal to Obama and other critics, Romney said, "It is sometimes said that those who are the most committed to stopping the Iranian regime from securing nuclear weapons are reckless and provocative and inviting war.

"The opposite is true. We are the true peacemakers," he said.

Romney flew to the Middle East from Britain, where he caused a stir by questioning whether officials there were fully prepared for the Olympic Games. A stop in Poland will complete his trip.

Four years ago, Obama visited Israel as a presidential candidate, part of a five-nation trip meant to establish his own foreign policy credentials.

A goal of Romney's overseas trip is to demonstrate his confidence on the world stage, but his stop in Israel also was designed to appeal to evangelical voters at home and to cut into Obama's support among Jewish voters and donors. A Gallup survey of Jewish voters released Friday showed Obama with a 68-25 edge over Romney.

Romney and other Republicans have said Obama is insufficiently supportive of Israel, noting statements the president has made about settlements and his handling of evident Iranian attempts to develop nuclear weapons.

In a March speech before a pro-Israel lobby in Washington, Obama warned of "loose talk of war" that serves only to drive up oil prices. "Now is the time to let our increased pressure sink in and sustain the broad international coalition we have built," he said at the time.

Romney's comments at the Monday fundraiser will be open to a small group of reporters.

Penn State likely will loan money to pay NCAA fine

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The president of Penn State says the university will probably have to give its athletic department a long-term loan to pay the $60 million fine imposed by the National Collegiate Athletic Association in light of the child sex abuse scandal.

Rodney Erickson told CBS's "Face the Nation" program in a broadcast aired Sunday that a combination of funds including the football program's financial reserves will be used to pay the fine.

Asked whether Penn State had put too much emphasis on football, Erickson called the athletics program "a tremendous success" but said some parts perhaps "became too much areas unto themselves."

Erickson also said people will have to judge for themselves the legacy of longtime coach Joe Paterno, but he said he believes the coach's educational legacy will stand.

Home Improvement Loans

?

Home improvement loans are essentially money that is lent to homeowners to carry out repairs or remodel their property.? A home improvement loan is not automatically secured by the property that it is intended to improve and might be simply classified as a home improvement by the lending agency.? These advances are unsecured or secured and are typically short term loans.

Loans for home improvement are intended to boost the value of the home; therefore, it is essential to carefully think about the best ways to use the loan.? The money that is spent on improving the home is added to the overall value of the home and your aim should be to recoup the cost in the event that you ever decide to put the home up for sale.

Additionally, home improvement loans can assist in paying for intricate remodeling projects to renovate the home or simpler undertakings.? Home improvement loan rates are typically lower than those attached to personal loans or credit cards.

You can access a home improvement loan to:

  • Update the features of your home or benefit from additional living space while staying in a preferred neighborhood.
  • Personalize the home so that it fits your lifestyle by adding a bedroom in the attic or finishing a basement.
  • Acquire a short sale or a foreclosed property and organize a renovation project in order to get the home to fit your tastes and requirements.

Types of Loans for Home Improvement

loans for home improvement

Renovation Lending

This type of loan is typically accessed to purchase a property that is being sold ?as is.?? Renovation lending will incorporate the cost of repair as well as the purchase price of the property.? Therefore, the buyer will be able to buy the house and pay to get it professionally renovated.

Refinance Renovation Loans

These are home improvement loans that are accessed with the intention of taking out equity on the home to specifically utilize for renovating the home.

Home Equity Loans

This type of loan allows the borrower to use the equity in his or her home as collateral.? They are frequently used to pay for major expenses like home renovations.

Line of Credit

A line of credit enables individuals to access the money provided by the lender as needed, up to a pre-determined credit limit.

Cash Out Finance

In real estate, cash out finance occurs when a loan is accessed on property that is already owned and the amount of the loan is above the, payoff of existing liens cost of transaction and associated expenses.

Things to Think about when Accessing Loans for Home Improvement

  1. Is the renovation in keeping with the value of the homes in the neighborhood?? Adding a massive addition could transform your home into the best on the block and the most expensive and largest as well, potentially making it more difficult to sell.
  2. What is the your budget and how much equity is accessible for improvements to the home?? In the event that you only paid $60,000 for the property ten years ago and currently similar homes are selling for $140,000, then there will be no problem in you investing in repairs and updates.
  3. Are you receiving the most value for your money?? Studies have indicated that kitchens and bathroom upgrades and curb appeal provide an excellent return on investment. Ensure the money is spent where it counts.

Home Improvement Loan Projects Ideas

The possibilities for improvement that a loan can provide are just about impossible to calculate. Though there are several possible design and decorating improvements, below are a few that you could think about:

1.?? ?Updates

Focus on kitchens and bathrooms when using the home improvement loan.? Bathrooms and kitchens seemingly get outdated quite quickly; therefore, it is essential to use neutral colors and standard design concepts.? The shag carpet was a hit in the 1970s but desperately needs replacing today.

2.?? ?Additions

A house with 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms could greatly benefit from a third bedroom. Likewise, if your home currently has 3 bedrooms and 1 bathroom a second bathroom could significantly contribute to its value.? Additionally, if the current structure has 2 bedrooms and 1 bathroom, think about building a master suite that is outfitted with a fully updated bathroom and his and her walk-in closets.

3.?? ?Curb Appeal

Exterior painting, landscaping and other basic improvements can go a long way in making a difference in the value and general perception of your home.? Bear these projects in mind when you are making the budget for your renovation project.

Though the objective of home improvement loans is to upgrade the home or make repairs, the challenge will be to make the money stretch even further and raise the value of the home above the amount of money spent.

Phelps survives scare as Games begin

Swimming legend Michael Phelps suffered a nervy start in his bid for Olympic history Saturday as the London Games swung into full-blown action with China claiming the first gold medal.

Kazakh cyclist Alexandre Vinokourov shocked hosts Britain in the men's road race, and tennis stars Roger Federer and Serena Williams made progress in the familiar surroundings of Wimbledon.

After Friday's lavish opening ceremony, the 30th Games got down to serious business with competition in 19 sports, from the far-flung rowing lake of Eton Dorney and across east London's Olympic Park.

In the pool, visited on Saturday by Queen Elizabeth II, Phelps needs just three medals to surpass Soviet gymnast Larisa Latynina's all-time career record of 18.

But the defending champion just scraped into Saturday's 400m individual medley final by the skin of his teeth.

Phelps finished in 4min 13.33sec to grab the eighth and last spot in the final which takes place later Saturday, but sounded a defiant note afterwards despite his brush with disaster.

"A final spot is a final spot," Phelps said, while acknowledging he had been caught cold. "I didn't expect those guys to go that fast. I just wanted to try to get some good underwater, try to get some good times.

"You can't win the gold medal from the morning," he added.

American rival Ryan Lochte, who has established himself as a threat to Phelps in both the 200m and 400m medleys, was content to finish second in his heat behind South African Chad le Clos.

Le Clos's 4:12.24 was second-fastest of the morning, and Lochte was third-fastest of the day in 4:12.35.

In a major drama at the Aquatics Centre, reigning Olympic champion Park Tae-Hwan of South Korea was disqualified in the 400m freestyle for a false start -- before being reinstated hours later.

An appeal by the South Korean delegation was rejected by the competition referee, but world governing body FINA's jury of appeal overturned the disqualification on the advice of the its technical commission.

No explanation was given for the sudden about-turn, which keeps Park on course for his long-awaited showdown with Chinese star Sun Yang in Saturday's evening finals.

Chinese world number one shooter Yi Siling had the honour of claiming the first of the Games' 302 golds at the Royal Artillery Barracks in the women's 10m Air Rifle.

Yi defeated Poland's Sylwia Bogacka, with Yu Dan of China taking bronze.

"It's very exciting. Very happy. I'm very grateful to China. And to my mother and father who I love very much," Yi said.

Russia's Arsen Galstyan won the men's under-60kg judo and Sarah Menezes took Brazil's first Olympic gold in the sport, in the women's under-48kg.

But the story of the under-48kg was Hungary's Eva Csernoviczki, who bounced back from being strangled unconscious in the quarter-finals to claim an unlikely bronze.

In the men's cycling, Britain's Tour de France heroes Bradley Wiggins and Mark Cavendish were undone by a combination of tactical racing and some incisive, late attacks, finishing well off the podium.

South Korea enjoyed a golden start when sharpshooter Jin Jong-Oh won the Olympic men's 10m air pistol gold medal.

And New Zealand's Hamish Bond and Eric Murray set the third world record of the Games, in the men's pairs rowing.

South Korea had set new individual and team men's archery records on Friday thanks to the form of legally blind archer Im Dong-Hyun.

But they could not keep up their magnificent scoring and finished behind third in the team competition behind Italy and the United States.

Saturday also witnessed the first failed drugs test of the Games after Albanian weightlifter Hysen Pulaku was suspended for taking the banned steroid stanozolol -- the same drug that cost Canada's Ben Johnson his 100m athletics gold at the 1988 Seoul Games.

Wimbledon champion Federer, seeking singles gold to go with his 2008 doubles title -- and 17 grand slams -- survived a scare before beating Colombia's Alejandro Falla in three sets.

Williams, cheered on by US First Lady Michelle Obama, crushed Jelena Jankovic 6-3, 6-1.

But US Open champion Samantha Stosur and Li Na, last year's French Open winner, were both rolled out of the All England Club with defeats to Carla Suarez Navarro and Daniela Hantuchova respectively.

House drought bill keeps $5 billion subsidy targeted by reformers

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Farmers would get another round of the $5 billion a year "direct payment" subsidy, targeted by reformers as wasteful spending, in a Republican-drawn offer of disaster aid for farmers hurt by the worst drought in half a century.

The package, unveiled on Friday, combines drought relief with a one-year extension of the farm program. If passed by the House next week and accepted by Senate, it would end a farm-bill stalemate by deferring work until 2013, when cost-cutting pressure may be intense.

An estimated $1.2 billion in drought relief would be provided under the bill, half to livestock producers and half to crop growers. While crop insurance will provide a safety net for many growers, livestock producers face parched pastures and rising feed costs.

The direct payment, paid to cotton, grain and soybean growers regardless of need, was marked for elimination in farm bills in the House and Senate this year. Budget hawks and environmentalists said the direct payment is wasted money, considering the farm sector enjoys boom times and the huge federal deficit.

An advocate for small farmers, the National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition, called for the House to "vote down this dirty extension bill." The bill would cut soil and water conservation programs while keeping the direct payment, it said.

Two-thirds of the continental United States is under moderate to exceptional drought and 40 percent of U.S. counties are listed as agricultural disaster areas. The worst drought conditions since 1956 fueled demands for Congress to act.

House Agriculture Committee chairman Frank Lucas said the package responded to "devastating drought conditions afflicting most of our country" and, by extending the 2008 farm law expiring on September 30, would end any doubts about the farm program for the new crop year.

Collin Peterson, the Democratic leader on the committee, said he opposed an extension unless it was a vehicle for a speedy compromise on a successor to the 2008 law that expires on Sept 30. There is virtually no way for Congress to meet that deadline without resorting to unusual parliamentary methods.

House Republican leaders are sitting on a $491 billion farm bill that was approved by Lucas' committee earlier this month because it faces strong opposition. Majority Leader Eric Cantor says the Senate-passed farm bill is unacceptable.

The Senate bill could save $23 billion over 10 years compared to $35 billion in the House bill. The House bill would raise crop support prices by up to 40 percent while the Senate would eliminate almost all traditional farm subsidies and, instead, compensate growers for low prices and poor yields.

Food stamps for the poor would be cut by $16 billion in the House farm bill, the largest cuts since the 1990s. Democrats want to eliminate the food stamp cuts while some Republicans want deeper cuts throughout the farm bill.

The disaster bill would revive disaster programs that share feed cost for livestock producers and compensate them for animals killed by drought as well as programs to assist fruit, vegetable, tree and fish farmers. The so-called SURE program for crop growers also would be extended.

On Thursday, Senate Agriculture Committee chairwoman Debbie Stabenow said she was ready to make a legislative sprint and complete a new, full-scale farm bill. "If Congress does what Congress always does and kicks the can down the road with a short-term extension, there will be no reform, direct payments will continue, we'll lose the opportunity for major deficit reduction and we'll deliver a real blow to our economic recovery," said Stabenow.

Can't 'find your friends' on Instagram? Go cry to Twitter

18 hrs.

Tracking down your Twitter buddies among Instagram's 80 million users is now tougher than ever?? because the photo-sharing service's "Find Your Friends" feature is kaput. And Twitter appears to be at fault.

As TechCrunch's Alexia Tsotsis reports,?the "Find Your Friends"?feature ? which is buried within your Instagram app's settings ? is now useless "due to API restrictions from Twitter's end."

In plain terms??In order to find your Twitter friends, Instagram needed to snag some data from Twitter. And for some reason, Twitter decided to change the locks.

In fact, if you stubbornly?do try to find your Twitter friends on Instagram right now, a little pop-up message will offer that very?same explanation:

Unable to Find Friends?

Twitter no longer allows its users to access this information in Instagram via the Twitter API. We apologize for any?inconvenience.

We reached out to Twitter to see if the social network had anything to say about this change?? which is pretty darn awkward if you consider that Twitter founder Jack Dorsey happens to be an Instagram investor?? but we have not heard back yet. We?will update once we do.

In the meantime, we'll just point out that this isn't the first time something like this has happened. As Tsotsis recalls, "Facebook has done similar to Twitter in past years. For example, it blocked Twitter?s access to Facebook?s in-app friend finder feature in June of 2010."?

Amusingly, Instagram was recently acquired by Facebook. Guess what goes around?comes around.

Want more tech news?or interesting?links? You'll get plenty of both if you keep up with Rosa Golijan, the writer of this post, by following her on?Twitter, subscribing to her?Facebook?posts,?or circling her?on?Google+.

Have a specific goal in mind. Figure out exactly what it is you want your website to do, and aim towards that goal. Start small at first, say by increasing traffic, and then move out to other goals. Many a website has failed because they tried too much at one time.

Add a human touch to your internet marketing by using video links. A friendly voice or memorable clip can establish a more social connection with existing or prospective customers.

To help broadcast your message to a targeted audience, you should consider using email marketing software. Email marketing software has the ability to send out bulk mail to a targeted audience based on a supplied opt-in list of people who have shown an interest in your products. It?s a great way to send out a newsletter or promotional message each month.

Perform adequate internet research before implementing any internet marketing strategies into your efforts. You want to know what your competition is up to and what techniques out there are working. You also want to know what is relevant to your business and what people you are targeting are looking for online.

Drive traffic to your website by adding relevant content. It does not matter how much traffic visits a website if it is the wrong traffic. Ensure that you are getting the right traffic by using information and videos pertain to your website. Give information you think your customer would want about your product or service.

Market your website by taking advantage of every possible way to advertise your web address. Post an ad in the yellow pages. Include the address on all of your business stationery and paperwork, including business cards, receipts and invoices. Advertise in the newspaper and magazines. Distribute pamphlets at trade shows. Take the guesswork out of finding your business online by making the web address readily available through a number of sources.

Offer high quality and a good visitor experience. Visitors to your website will be able to tell if you are just in it for the money. If you fill your website with a lot of fluff that doesn?t provide real information or value, or if your website is just a bunch of affiliate ads, you may attract a lot of initial visitors, but you won?t do any repeat business.

A very important keyword to use, in order to have a successful internet marketing advertisement, is the word ?new?. People like hearing that the product that you are selling is new and innovative. A good phrase to say are phrases, such as, ?This product is new and was just released in the market.?

Suggest additional product to customers who are checking out. When a customer is at the order page on your site, give them information about some related products that you sell. Make it easy for them to add these to their order. Don?t make it so they have to go to other pages or perform many extra steps.

You should include as many links to other websites on your own pages. If these links attract a lot of visitors, chances are this will encourage people to link back to your website. Make sure you do not link the website of a competitor though. If a website never links back to you, stop creating link for it.

Even if you?re not overly keen on opening a blog for your marketing efforts, you should still be a frequent visitor of other people?s blogs. Find blogs related to your market niche and be a constant presence there, supplying legitimate comments and criticism. Anything that boosts your profile is good for marketing.

Online consumers need assurance that your product or service will perform according to their expectations and exactly as depicted in the ad, website, or description. Your marketing materials should include words that inspire confidence, such as ?guaranteed?, ?assurance?, and ?promise?. This communicates your clear willingness to deliver only the best.

Adding video to your website can have a wonderful effect on your internet marketing efforts. Do not worry about jumping into the movie business; flawless production values are not the important things in business website videos. It is more important by far to be honest and helpful to your potential customers. Your online video should tell them something they will find useful and interesting.

You should make the words on your site as easy to read as possible. Do not underline things as this can make them difficult to read. Use hyphens in between words that can use them as it makes them easier to read. The easier your site is to read the more traffic it will receive.

If you?re using Twitter as part of your internet marketing strategy, don?t just focus on your product exclusively. You want to broaden your base a bit so that you become an authoritative source of information on your niche. That way, when you do integrate marketing messages into your tweets, you?re more likely to convert customers.

If you properly market your Internet business you should be able to see outstanding traffic and a boom in your profit margin. Using the tips that have been provided is a great way for you to be sure that you are marketing your business in the best possible way that you can.

Peep the 8th Annual Real-Time Communications Conference and ...

This September, you once again have an opportunity to hob nob and grease palms with the movers and shakers of the VoIP industry. The Illinois Institute of Technology is hosting the 8th annual Real-Time Communications Conference and Expo, and this year is sure to be by far the biggest yet. Boasting over 200 speakers, 50 sponsors, and several hundred paying attendees last year, the annual Conference and Expo is the perfect time and place to get informed and connected to both the business and academic sides of cutting-edge communications technology.

Covering an arc from VoIP to Video, Mobility to Websites, this conference has been a staple of the industry and has been expanding exponentially for the last couple of years. One distinct advantage for the conference this year is its location on the IIT?s main campus, right in downtown Chicago.

A tech campus par excellence, IIT Chicago is looking to position itself at the forefront of the new economy by making itself a leader in communications technology development and education. Early September is a beautiful time in the Great Lakes region. It will definitely lend its warm charm to such an auspicious event, and you?ll be able to take a dip in Lake Michigan if you have any time left over.

This is heavy duty stuff, and not worth missing if you consider yourself a ?VoIP-head?, if you have any interest in internet communications whatsoever, or even if you are just looking for an excuse to head out to lovely Chicago. High-level representatives from all the major players in mobile communications technology are expected to make appearances, and there will be hundreds of booths to pique your interest.

Last year?s keynote speaker was Martin Cooper, a developer and inventor of many of Motorola?s earliest cellular technologies. This year, look for something even more compelling. Henning Schulzrinne, Chief Technology Officer of the Federal Communications Commission, has already been confirmed as one of the initial keynotes, so you know there will need to be some heavyweights to trump that. For more information, check out the event website at http://www.rtc-conference.com/.

Rambus planning appeal after losing ITC patent case against LSI and STMicroelectronics

Rambus has lost the ITC dispute it filed with most of the electronics industry back in the day. Only LSI and STMicroelectronics remained as respondents after the company negotiated settlements with Freescale, Broadcom, MediaTek and NVIDIA. In its decision, the court found that some of the patents were unenforceable, while others ceased to be under the "clean hands" doctrine because Rambus had allegedly destroyed relevant documents. Company general counsel, Thomas Lavelle, has said in a statement that its next move might be to make an appeal to the Federal Circuit -- where it's hoping for better luck.

Telepresent kissing machine sadder than actual long-distance ...

To cope with long-distance relationships, partners often train memory like a muscle, flexing in times of desire a truly sensational remembrance of compassion, in order to rejoin lost love with the present. But if you would rather let this extraordinary part of the brain atrophy in lieu of a cheap technological surrogate, you end up kissing a lumpy, bloated device of mechanical grotesquerie called a Kissenger.

The lips contain pressure sensors and actuators. When you kiss them, the shape changes you create are transmitted in real time over the net to a receiving Kissenger. There, the actuators reproduce the mirror image of the pressure patterns you created? magically transmitting your smacker to your partner.

But is it really your partner? As more people have the option become globally itinerant and remotely in love, solutions to the pain distance causes can be devastating to the relationship. I'm not sure what devastates the human heart more?losing love, or making love to the featureless head of a robotic Harry Kissinger.

Like most commentators, US broadcaster CNN was unimpressed. The researchers' idea of recording celebrity tongue motions for all to experience was not particularly well received.

"The main aim is to improve long-distance relationships, says [Hooman Samani of Singapore-based Lovotics, which developed the device.] We've taken several steps to minimise the creepiness."

Apparently, this means dressing up the egg like a pig. If the distance must carry on, perhaps you can do what Kevin Warwick did?implant a chip and sidestep the horror of the uncanny valley for pure telekinetic sensation.

Rock Climbing: The Next Great American Passtime? ? Julie Ershadi

The Washington Post?s lifestyle magazine this weekend had a great feature on Sasha DiGiulian, 19-year-old climbing prodigy and native of Alexandria, VA. Rock climbing has been my favorite sport and hobby for several years now, so it was a real pleasure to take in the photos and stories in this piece.

At my rock gym in Los Angeles, we decorate the walls with posters of DiGiulian and other great climbers doing their thing in Mad Rock-brand climbing gear. When I?m home, I sometimes work birthday parties and other group climbing events that come in to the gym.

Check out the WaPo piece. For more stuff like it ? and stuff not like it, like politics ? follow me on Twitter and Facebook.

Why Is Everyone on the Internet So Angry?

online commenters, facebook, angry commenters, online personality Comment threads are full of dislike. Image: Facebook

Showcasing more than fifty of the most provocative, original, and significant online essays from 2011, The Best Science Writing Online 2012 will change the way...

With a presidential campaign, health care and the gun control debate in the news these days, one can't help getting sucked into the flame wars that are Internet comment threads. But psychologists say this addictive form of vitriolic back and forth should be avoided ? or simply censored by online media outlets ? because it actually damages society and mental health.

These days, online comments "are extraordinarily aggressive, without resolving anything," said Art Markman, a professor of psychology at the University of Texas at Austin. "At the end of it you can't possibly feel like anybody heard you. Having a strong emotional experience that doesn't resolve itself in any healthy way can't be a good thing."

If it's so unsatisfying and unhealthy, why do we do it?

A perfect storm of factors come together to engender the rudeness and aggression seen in the comments' sections of Web pages, Markman said. First, commenters are often virtually anonymous, and thus, unaccountable for their rudeness. Second, they are at a distance from the target of their anger ? be it the article they're commenting on or another comment on that article ? and people tend to antagonize distant abstractions more easily than living, breathing interlocutors. Third, it's easier to be nasty in writing than in speech, hence the now somewhat outmoded practice of leaving angry notes (back when people used paper), Markman said. [Infographic: A Typical Day on the Internet]

And because comment-section discourses don't happen in real time, commenters can write lengthy monologues, which tend to entrench them in their extreme viewpoint. "When you're having a conversation in person, who actually gets to deliver a monologue except people in the movies? Even if you get angry, people are talking back and forth and so eventually you have to calm down and listen so you can have a conversation," Markman told Life's Little Mysteries.

Chiming in on comment threads may even give one a feeling of accomplishment, albeit a false one. "There is so much going on in our lives that it is hard to find time to get out and physically help a cause, which makes 'armchair activism' an enticing [proposition]," a blogger at Daily Kos opined in a July 23 article.

And finally, Edward Wasserman, Knight Professor in Journalism Ethics at Washington and Lee University, noted another cause of the vitriol: bad examples set by the media. "Unfortunately, mainstream media have made a fortune teaching people the wrong ways to talk to each other, offering up Jerry Springer, Crossfire, Bill O'Reilly. People understandably conclude rage is the political vernacular, that this is how public ideas are talked about," Wasserman wrote in an article on his university's website. "It isn't."

Communication, the scholars say, is really about taking someone else's perspective, understanding it, and responding. "Tone of voice and gesture can have a large influence on your ability to understand what someone is saying," Markman said. "The further away from face-to-face, real-time dialogue you get, the harder it is to communicate."

In his opinion, media outlets should cut down on the anger and hatred that have become the norm in reader exchanges. "It's valuable to allow all sides of an argument to be heard. But it's not valuable for there to be personal attacks, or to have messages with an extremely angry tone. Even someone who is making a legitimate point but with an angry tone is hurting the nature of the argument, because they are promoting people to respond in kind," he said. "If on a website comments are left up that are making personal attacks in the nastiest way, you're sending the message that this is acceptable human behavior." Tie My Shoes, Please: How Persuasion Works

Can You Help Me Tie My Shoe? Researchers found that when study participants were asked an unusual request, they were more likely later on to perform a favor.

Marketers, managers and panhandlers all have something in common: They regularly want to make you do things they want. Marketers want you to buy stuff, managers want you to finish projects on time, and panhandlers want you to spare a buck, or three.

Over the years, psychologists have studied the techniques of manipulation and found several that seem to work. (Read on only if you agree to use these techniques for good and not for evil!)

One is called the door-in-the-face technique. You start by asking for something outrageous; when that's turned down, you then ask for something reasonable. A boss may ask an employee to work weekends for a whole year, for example, and when that request gets turned down, the manager might ask for a report to be turned in by Friday. The outrageous request reframes the real request to make it sound reasonable.

?

Another technique is known as fear-then-relief. Here, you tell someone he narrowly dodged a bullet and take advantage of his relief to make your real request.

The best-studied technique of all is the foot in the door. The panhandler who stops to ask you the time before asking you to spare a buck is employing the technique. In contrast to the door in the face, the foot in the door starts by making a very small, easy-to-accomplish request, and then follows up with the real request.

In a series of new experiments, researcher Dariusz Dolinski of the Warsaw School of Social Sciences and Humanities in Poland found that when the initial request was highly unusual, people were more likely to comply with the demand that followed it.

Dolinski had a confederate stop people en route to a supermarket and say to them, "Excuse me, but I suffer from terrible back pain and I cannot bend down. My shoelaces are undone. Could you please be so kind as to tie them for me?"

That was the unusual request. Other passersby were given a routine marketing survey.

A little later, the passersby were stopped by a woman standing outside the supermarket.

Dolinski wrote: "The second request was posed at the entrance to the supermarket by a woman who asked the participants to 'keep an eye' on her shopping cart full of goods 'for a moment.' She explained that her husband had her car keys and he had disappeared somewhere in the supermarket, and as the cart had a broken wheel, it was very hard to push. She would like to look for her husband without having to push the cart."

Dolinski found that people were more likely to mind the woman's grocery cart when they had been previously asked to fulfill an unusual request ? to tie someone else's shoelaces.

BJ?RK Vespertine music review by AtomicCrimsonRush

3 stars "Vespertine"'s album cover features Bjork hiding her face and the swan is superimposed to remind us of THAT dress. Her pixie image has never been more indelible as she shies away from convention totally to produce some of the more unsettling compositions, reflecting a disturbing moment in her career after shaking off stalkers, reporters and the media. The lyrics have always been on the edge but here she dwells on the mournful side of life, the hopelessness of unrequited love, the thoughts of escape, decisions to move on, and the blissful ignorance of betrayal. Bjork sounds cynical but intimate and reflective, and bravely moves into many styles of singing, from sustained cries to breathy whispers. It is a cold, wintery album with dripping icicles, footsteps in the snow, chilling wind chimes, cold breath on a frosty window, and icy lyrics. I rank this as among her best to this point in her career. It begins with some of her best compositions but tends to fade towards the end.

She launches wonderfully into 'Hidden Place' which is quite a dramatic Bjork composition, with very nice synth motifs and a haunting melody. It sounds more like a radio oriented single than a lot of the material on this quirky album. The album houses some of Bjork's most daring and weird music. The odd electronic percussion sounds and breathy voice on 'Cocoon' is perhaps the new direction for Bjork who is gearing towards her weirdest era ever, that will be realised on the downright bizarre "Medulla" in 2004.

The unsettling squelchy percussion continues on 'It's Not Up To You', and minimalist chimes. It is quite effective and Bjork sounds very melancholy and deranged in an endearing way.

The struggles of coping are reflected in 'Undo', with overlayed vocals and dark music orchestration. She sings with pain, "I am praying to be in a generous mood, kindness kind, to share, it's not meant to be a struggle up here." An interesting and intense song with angelic ending as if she has found peace; it almost feels like the voice of Selma from "Dancer in the Dark". Perhaps the film had some impact as her inspiration here.

'Pagan Poetry' is a very popular song, heard in live sets often, and it is easy to see why as it is definitive Bjork. The chiming harp music is beautiful, balanced by the deep bass synths and Bjork's measured rhythmic vocals. She sings coldly of dark secrets, "five fingers form a pattern yet to be matched on the surface implicity, from the darkest pit in me." I like the way Bjork sings with so much passion here and never holds back on snarling out hatred, and then her voice is mixed to the front and sounds raw and wracked in pain, "I love him I love him I love him I love him." A haunting highlight of "Vespertine".

'Frosti' has more sparkling chimes than usual, sounding like wind chimes and I guess like snowflakes dropping out of the winter sky. Bjork likes to convey childlike innocence with the use of musical boxes, clavichords and harps on her albums but she really immerses her music in the chimes on this album. It is a nice sound after all the dark nuances and Bjork's vocals are absent, though it would have been nice to hear something to add to the sound.

This merges seamlessly into 'Aurora' with Bjork's voice and an effect that may represent walking in the snow. Her voice is beautiful as she reaches the angelic high register with vocal intonations. The lyrics focus on the twilight of day, the aurora that sparkles and shoots beyond the surface, when the sun hits the cold air and causes the ripples of colour, reflecting her state of mind, the ray in the dark in the midst of turmoil.

'An Echo A Stain' has an atmospheric sound like a deranged swampy nightscape, weird frog and cricket sounds and an eerie wind howl. It is very effective to convey loneliness and alienation. Bjork sings huskily and quietly, "feel my breath on your neck, on your heart, don't say no to me, I won't see you tonight, I'm sorry you saw that." The music is quite ominous and the vocals are given a weird reverberation at times like an echo, but this is a dark song with sonic weirdness that Bjork will capitalise on with subsequent albums.

The chimes continue to dominate on 'Sun In My Mouth' and the poetry is quite beautiful. The orchestral arrangement works nicely giving a cinematic feel and Bjork's vocal range is stretched to the highest register and she sounds beautiful in these moments. After this 'Heirloom' has a strong percussion and string pads to house Bjork's vocals. She sings of memories, of things her mother baked for her, "while I'm asleep my mother comes and pours warm glowing oil into my wide open throat, everytime I feel a hoarseness I swallow warm glowing light, you make me feel so much better". Quite a nice song really with some odd sections of electronica.

'Harm of Will' is a quiet Bjork song with strings, chimes and no percussion. Bjork's overlayed breathing is soothing as is her gentle singing. Cetainly this breathy effect will be used on her next studio album, particularly on 'Pleasure Is All Mine'. The content of the song sounds rather disturbing about a secret sexual encounter, with consent as it appears, "he placed her unclothed, on top of the family tree, And if he has chosen the point while she is under him, Then leave her coily placed crouched sucking him, for it is I with her on knee." The "family tree" has phallic connotations, and may represent the act of placing an angel at the top of a Christmas tree. The song goes on to say that "he controls what there'll be, he makes his face known to none" to discard what had been done, the secret unrevealed to protect his reputation after the deed. Some research reveals that the song is actually about Will Oldham, a lover of Harmony Korine who wrote the lyrics. The album closes with 'Unison', with an upbeat rhythm that has more hope than other songs here, but not one of my favourites.

"Vespertine" is a very melancholy and icy cold winter album, and it is apparent that Bjork is shedding her skin of any radio friendliness to embrace a very cold stark approach with darker atmospheres and weirdness. She dwells on dark emotions, sadness and the futility of abuse. This breaking down of musical barriers will alienate some fans and of course draw in others. "Medulla" will further cause division as Bjork embarks on her most daring provocative album ever (hear 'Where Is The Line', 'Who Is It', 'Ancestors', 'Mouth's Cradle', 'Midvikudags' and 'Submarine' to experience the most bizarre Bjork). In any case, "Vespertine" is a great album to chill out to with Icelandic scapes of winter's chill. 3 and a half stars due to the great opening tracks.
