S.Africa mine killings expose violent union rivalry

The deadly industrial protests last week at a platinum mine in South Africa have laid bare a fierce and violent battle for domination among trade unions in Africa's wealthiest and leading democracy.

The killing of 44 people during a wildcat strike at the Marikana mine last week highlighted the depth of internal politics between the main and three-decades old National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) and the 11-year-old Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU).

The NUM has come under fire from workers accusing it of being alienated from day-to-day shop floor issues and having too cosy a relationship with management.

Boasting a membership of 300,000, NUM is the largest single affiliate of the 2.2 million-strong umbrella union Cosatu, a crucial ally and support base of the ruling ANC.

Hamadziripi Tamukamoyo, a researcher with south Africa's Institute of Security Studies said "some have argued that Cosatu ...have largely come to represent a 'working class aristocracy' and are too involved in ANC elite politics to adequately work in the interest of the poor."

Some digruntled NUM activists broke away to form a splinter independent union, AMCU in a bid to to close the gap.

But it is only in recent months that AMCU appeared to have consolidated its position. It quickly gained ground early this year after a six-week violent strike at Impala Platinum mine, the world's second largest, sitting on the same platinum belt as Lonmin.

Some 17,000 workers were sacked during the strike but then reinstated, after which AMCU said it had stripped most of the NUM membership to claim more than 50 percent on the its register and demanded recognition.

For a union to be recognised by law for collective bargaining purposes, it has to attain a membership of more than 50 percent of the workforce.

Violence and intimidation have become a culture to coerce workers to take part in strikes or join unions.

Unions survive on workers' subscriptions, often calculated as a percentage of their salaries.

The two unions denied being behind the deadly protests at Lonimn mine. ISS also said the strike was started by non-unionised labour.

But the AMCU leader Joseph Mathunjwa, accompanied by a group of praise singers, stormed into a memorial service organised for the victims of the Lonmin killins of Thursday and was given a platform to address mourners.

Some of the songs sung during the violent protests staged on a kopje in Marikana town, were anti NUM.

"It's very difficult to build a very strong worker solidarity...so you use violence to bring them together. Violence becomes a tool to achieve worker solidarity," said Crispen Chinguno, an industrial relations researcher at the University of Witwatersrand.

The violence can be linked to the post-aparthied social order, which Chinguno said bred strong trade unions, that are "covertly hostile to competition."

Workers, many of them unskilled, have openly changed allegiance to AMCU.

"I stopped being a member of the NUM because ...everyday, when we're in the strikes like this, they just told us 'go back to work' without any reason, without any answer that can satisfy us," said Joseph Motingwe, who defected to AMCU three years ago.

Belief in black juju has also taken root and was partly blamed for the workers'defiance during a standoff with police before 34 of them were gunned down.

Local media report that a video report shot by the police from a helicopter during the strike, showed naked men lining up to be rubbed with herbs that were believed would make them bullet-proof.

"The use of muti has become so institutionalised in everything they (unions) do," said Chinguno.

He said some of the 17,000 workers sacked and later reinstated at Impala believed they regained their jobs thanks to juju.

Product Creation Advice ? How Do I Sell My Audio Product Now ...

?

By Maritza Parra

I recently did a question and answer webinar and received many questions on the same subject?what exactly to do once you?ve created your audio product.

?I feel the only thing holding me up is the actual piecing together of getting my new product listed on my site, adding a payment option and getting all of the steps done in the right order. I feel paralyzed because I?m afraid I?ll miss something. The order of doing everything is what I?m overwhelmed by? help!?

Here?s a list of what to do after you?ve created your audio product

1. To Edit or Not to Edit. Does your audio product need some small editing? Keyword here is small. You don?t want to get stuck on making it perfect. Remember, it?s all about progress and not about perfection. Do you need to edit your audio? If your child is crying in the background or there?s a dog barking? yes. If you speak normally and have some Ahs and Ums? no. As long as the content is good, you don?t need to sound like you spent weeks in a professional studio. Get a copy of a low-cost or free audio editing software if you think you should do some small editing. Be sure and plan ahead for uninterrupted quiet when creating your audios because many times, you can create your audio without the need to edit afterward.

2. Brainstorm a Great Title. Think about what your audio product will deliver to your customers. What is it they really want? Try to avoid ?cutesy? titles that can detract from the value of your information.

3. Consider a Cover. Seriously think about getting a professional cover created for your audio product. This creates a higher perceived value in the mind of potential customers and clients. You can also just have a low-cost logo created as long as it looks professional in place of an audio CD cover.

4. Write The Product Sales Page. Wherever you put your audio product for sale, you will need some compelling sales copywriting. This is a great skill to cultivate. You can also choose to outsource this is you have the budget. When writing your sales copy, remember it is all about the customer and the bottom line benefits they will get from your product. This is not the place to focus on you and your greatness (?though I am sure you are!)

5. Choose How to Accept Money. You have many alternatives in shopping carts and there is always paypal. In the past, PayPal was seen as unprofessional but those days are over. It?s a fabulous option today. You are up and running very quickly and when you make a sale, the money you?ve earned is available instantly instead of days later as with a traditional shopping cart and merchant account.

6. Add Your Buy Now Button. Get the code for your button and place it in your sales page several times throughout the page. This is like asking people to buy several times. Don?t just ask once.

7. Ask Your List to Buy Now. It doesn?t matter how ?small? you feel your list community is, as soon as you have your sales page with your buy now button ready, ask your list community to buy your audio product. Give them a special incentive to do so immediately. A subscriber appreciation gift of X dollars if they purchase within the next 3 days. Email them each of these days to remind them of why they should buy your product (the benefit to them) and how many days or hours they have left to purchase your product at this special price. This serves several purposes, you will get a burst of confidence and momentum from seeing your first sales in this product and the infusion of cash can help you continue to find new subscribers and customers.

8. Find New Subscribers and Customers. After you?ve created your product and put it online to sell, it isn?t over. Just like a ?real? bricks and mortars business, you should always be looking for new potential customers and clients.

9. Keep Asking for the Sale. Do not hide your product once you?ve created it. Place a link to your sales page on your blog, recommend it as a subscriber resource in your newsletter or articles. Every once in a while, have another sales price event.

And now I would like to invite you to claim your Free Instant Access to my ?Easy Product Creation Secrets? Video to learn to record an audio product for free, turn it into an Ebook, turn that into a Video product and more when you visit http://www.ProductCreationBonus.com.

New material could lead to thin, flexible, wall-sized TVs

10 hrs.

Sheets of material commonly used as an industrial lubricant ? just one-molecule thick ??may usher in a new era of thin, flexible, and transparent electronics, according to a researcher at the forefront of the technology.

The material, molybdenum disulfide, is similar to wonder material graphene that researchers have been working with since 2004. Unlike graphene, the molybdenum disulfide has a property called a bandgap.

?A bandgap is the most important property for any material to be useful in electronic applications,? Tom?s Palacios, an associate professor of electrical engineering and computer science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, told me Friday.

?A bandgap is the property that allows a transistor, which is basically a switch, to either let the current flow or stop.?

A working switch means researchers can use the one-molecule thick sheets of the material to build "a new generation of electronic circuits,"?Palacios added.

Examples of possible gadgets range from living?room?wall-sized TVs that sip electricity to cars or buildings covered in sensors. The material could be used to weave the antenna and other circuitry of a cellphone into clothing ? meaning you could essentially wear your phone.

The material could even be applied to glass, producing displays on an office window or eyeglasses.?

Asked if this was in line with the Google glasses concept generating buzz of late, Palacios said, "It would definitely help to implement that concept."

He is particularly excited about the potential of the material to serve as a?supremely sensitive chemical sensor. Since the current flowing on the device is at the surface, anything that happens at the surface is going to affect the current.

"We are working on chemical sensors with molybdenum disulfide that should have much higher sensitivity than conventional sensors," he said. "They should allow us to detect single molecules of a given chemical component."

One could imagine that would be useful for anyone concerned about the spread or use of chemical weapons, for example.

Before any of this is possible, though, the researchers first need to be able to create the molybdenum disulfide sheets at a practical scale.?

The team currently gets small pieces via what?s known as the Scotch tape method, in which an adhesive is pressed against a molybdenum disulfide crystal and peeled off carefully.?

This sticks a few pieces of molybdenum disulfide to the adhesive, which is then pressed onto a piece of silicon.

"If we are very lucky, we will get a few flakes of molybdenum disulfide transferred from the scotch tape to the silicon wafer,??Palacios said. "And then we fabricate our devices."

The low-tech approach, he noted, is good for initial demonstrations of the material's potential, which is presented in a paper this month in the journal Nano Letters.??

A more efficient fabrication?process is required for commercialization of these potential technologies.

Palacios and colleagues are working on one such method via a process known as chemical vapor deposition. Initial results, he said, will be announced shortly.?

Stay tuned.

Sony will take on Broadway; first up: a musical 'Tootsie'

Dustin Hoffman

Dustin Hoffman in the 1982 comedy "Tootsie" (Columbia Pictures / August 24, 2012)

August 24, 2012, 9:00 a.m.

Sony Pictures Entertainment has announced it has signed a five-year deal with Tony-winning Broadway producer Scott Sanders to adapt the studio's films for the stage.

First up in the studio's extensive catalog? The 1982 comedy "Tootsie," which starred Dustin Hoffman in drag.

As part of the deal, Sony has purchased a 20% equity stake in the 5-year-old Scott Sanders Theatrical Productions, multiple news outlets have reported. A dollar amount was not disclosed.

Sanders' prior screen-to-stage credits include "The Color Purple" and "The Pee-wee Herman Show."

Sony's move is the latest attempt to parlay Hollywood hits into stage musicals. This year, movies were the inspiration for the high-flying cheerleading comedy "Bring It On," the holy-rolling musical "Leap of Faith" and the supernatural love story "Ghost."

Disney pretty much started the trend by staging many of its on-screen hits, including "Beauty and the Beast," ?The Lion King,? "Newsies" and ?Mary Poppins,? which is running at the Music Center through Sept. 2.

The ?Tootsie? musical is still in the early stages; no creative team as been announced.

Sen. Rand Paul pushes for legal hemp with Kentucky ag ...

Wearing a shirt made of hemp that he bought online from Canada, U.S. Sen. Rand Paul joined state Agriculture Commissioner James Comer on Thursday in calling for legalizing industrial hemp.

During a news conference before the 49th annual Kentucky Farm Bureau Country Ham Breakfast at the State Fair, Paul and Comer said allowing farmers to grow industrial hemp would be a financial boon for Kentucky. They said it could be used for a variety of products, including paper and livestock bedding, particularly in the horse industry.Comer said he is reviving the decade-old Industrial Hemp Commission in an effort to lift restrictions on the plant and that its chairman, former state Rep. Joe Barrows, D-Versailles, has agreed to step aside and let Comer chair the group.Paul, R-Bowling Green, said industrial hemp is legal in most industrialized nations."If Kentucky were to legalize it, then Kentucky would be at a competitive advantage," Paul said. Comer said he wants to make Kentucky "the epicenter" of industrial hemp production. The biggest obstacle to industrial hemp has been law-enforcement officials. The Kentucky Sheriff's Association has opposed legalizing industrial hemp in the past but has not taken a position on the issue for Kentucky's 2013 General Assembly, said its executive director, Jerry Wagner of Ewing.Wagner said that sheriffs have not been trained to distinguish between industrial hemp and marijuana and that they are concerned that allowing the growth of industrial hemp could lead to more marijuana.Paul and Comer said proper regulation of permits to grow industrial hemp would address that concern.Joining Paul and Comer at the news conference to show bipartisan support for industrial hemp were state Sens. Joey Pendleton, D-Hopkinsville; Dan Seum, R-Louisville; and Robin Webb, D-Grayson.Democratic Gov. Steve Beshear said he is "open to the idea of industrial hemp, but I know law enforcement has some very serious concerns about the similarity to marijuana and what it might do to their enforcement actions."House Speaker Greg Stumbo, D-Prestonsburg, said the issue has not met with success in the state legislature, but "it is probably something we can take a look at."Katie Moyer, chairman of the Kentucky Hemp Coalition from Hopkinsville, said the issue "has picked up a lot of steam in the last few years ? both on the state and federal levels. We see the tide turning for it."More than 1,800 people attended the breakfast, which featured speeches by Paul, U.S. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and Beshear.Beshear advocated congressional passage of a farm bill to provide financial relief for farmers in disasters, including this year's drought.Beshear accused members of Congress of not working together.McConnell said he wants a farm bill, but not one like the Senate approved earlier this year, which was 80 percent related to food stamps.Paul's comments focused on the federal deficit, improving infrastructure and the need for more time for legislators to read and study bills before voting on them.Beshear said before the breakfast that he expects to name a chief of staff within 10 days to replace Mike Haydon, who died unexpectedly earlier this month.

Fathers Pass Along More Mutations As They Age

The testes are towards the outside of the body and vulnerable to all sorts of things, while the ovaries are better protected. Furthermore, sperm is produced over the course of a lifetime, whereas eggs aren't. The end result is that eggs are likely to have the original genetic material of Mom, while the sperm is more likely to have been modified (by radiation, damage from trauma, copying errors, etc) from the original genetic material of Dad.

This seems like a good evolutionary strategy, however it arose: Mom provides a version that has allowed her to survive and reproduce, suggesting a minimum viability, which she passes on to the child. Dad provides a version of an evolutionarily successful human that is modified, allowing the species to improve itself (And if he's lived to old age, he was probably an effective survivor evolutionarily speaking).

Homeless man charged in LL Cool J home break-in

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Prosecutors say a homeless man has been charged with burglary for allegedly breaking into the California home of LL Cool J, where the actor-rapper subdued him.

Jonathan Kirby was charged Thursday with first-degree burglary with a person present and faces a maximum of 38 years to life in prison if convicted. Los Angeles County prosecutors are asking bail be set at $1.1 million for the 56-year-old, who has been convicted of at least two serious crimes.

Prosecutors say Kirby remains in a hospital with a broken nose, jaw and ribs after the early Wednesday altercation with the "NCIS: Los Angeles" actor. LL Cool J held Kirby until police arrived.

94% Moonrise Kingdom

All Critics (178) | Top Critics (41) | Fresh (166) | Rotten (11) | DVD (1)

Anderson never loses his core themes - young love, the need to escape, the bind and bluster of family. His "Kingdom" may not be large, but it is perfectly appointed.

Though undeniably smart and charming, "Moonrise Kingdom" loves itself the way the callow Holden Caulfield loves himself: unconditionally. Salinger understood the problem with that. Anderson may not.

The latest unadulterated delight from Wes Anderson, director of "Rushmore," "The Royal Tenenbaums" and "Fantastic Mr. Fox."

The usual complaints and caveats about Anderson - he's precious, his characters have no grounding in the real world - can be made about Moonrise Kingdom, but so what?

Anderson and his actors are able to convey more genuine feeling through these devices than most filmmakers can with more-traditional means.

One knock against some of Anderson's previous efforts is that they're too clever - so clever, in fact, that the humanity gets sucked out of them. That doesn't happen here.

It's a collection of cockeyed ideas compressed into a narrative that's utterly devoid of any actual attachment.

As detached as the filmmaking sometimes appears, I daresay you can feel something pure coming off of the screen. Moonrise Kingdom is a stellar film.

Summer lovin' just got a whole more stylish thanks to Wes Anderson.

Quirky, random, and surprisingly endearing for a Wes Anderson film--likely his best.

Funny, touching, sweet and drenched in '60s nostalgia, but reverberating with distant, haunting echoes of adolescent longing for practically anyone who grew up anytime, anyplace, anywhere.

"Moonrise Kingdom" is the type of movie that is charming for the soul and makes your brain happy in the process. All in all, it's just a heartfelt and well-written experience that will appeal to everyone.

These charming kids give "Moonrise Kingdom" the warm glow of a summer fairy-tale, one you'll want to hear again.

Pure Joy. This film's heroes may be pint-sized but their emotions and dreams are larger than life.

My immediate response is that it's a masterpiece and the best film to come out so far this year.

The offbeat, pixilated universes created by writer/director Wes Anderson (Rushmore, The Royal Tenenbaums, Fantastic Mr. Fox) are an acquired taste.

It's hard to judge a movie as a movie when you want to live inside it.

Magical Moonrise a Romantic Delight.

Intermittently amusing, distinctive, not always easy to digest

Moonrise Kingdom left me thunderstruck. ... Anderson contrasts a world in disorder with a well-pitched campsite, where everything is in its right place.

Anderson's movies work best if they're about kids or cartoon animals.

Among the all-stars, Edward Norton made me repeatedly chuckle, and it's always a pleasure to see Bruce Willis when he's not operating in paycheck-whore mode.

A sweetly kooky ode to the intensity of young love. The movie balances broad comedy with occasionally surreal quirk, while still holding the emotional center.

The adults who are so desperate to return the kid fugitives to their care actually envy the children's freedom, irresponsibility and, yes, love -- in a word, their youth: The kingdom that makes exiles of us all.

T-Mobile brings back unlimited data plan

(AP) ? Unlimited wireless data is back. After sliding off the menu of cellphone plans, data plans with no caps are making a comeback at smaller wireless companies trying to compete with AT&T and Verizon.

T-Mobile USA, the nation's fourth-largest cellphone company, said Wednesday that it will start selling an unlimited-data plan again on Sept. 5, after stopping sales of such plans early last year. A day earlier, No. 5 carrier MetroPCS cut the price of its unlimited-data plan as a promotion for a limited time.

The moves by T-Mobile USA and MetroPCS, neither of which sells the iPhone, come as their three larger rivals are thought to be gearing up to begin selling the iPhone 5 in a month or so.

No. 3 carrier Sprint Nextel Corp. already has an unlimited-data plan and credits that with helping it attract customers for its smartphones.

AT&T, the nation's second-largest carrier, stopped signing up customers for unlimited data plans two years ago, while No. 1 Verizon Wireless stopped last year. Both have shifted toward lifting all limits on calls and texting, but limiting data usage.

From a network management perspective, that makes sense, as calls and texts use very little network capacity, while video downloads and other data use can clog the network and slow the service for everyone. The iPhone and the data use it encouraged initially caused big problems for AT&T in New York and San Francisco. Sprint's network is showing signs of congestion in some tests.

Limited-data plans pose problems for customers, however. It's easier to figure out how many minutes of calling you need in a month than it is to figure out how many gigabytes you'll use.

T-Mobile is launching the plan because it's what customers want, said Kevin McLaughlin, vice president of marketing at the Bellevue, Wash., company. He said the company is confident it can keep its network "fast and dependable" even with unlimited-data users on it.

T-Mobile's unlimited plan will cost $30 per month when added to a regular calling and texting plan and $20 when added to a cheaper "Value" plan offered to customers who bring their own phones. MetroPCS Communications Inc.'s unlimited plan will cost $55 per month during the promotion period, down from $70, and will include unlimited texting and calls.

T-Mobile had been calling all its data plans "unlimited," but once a customer hits a certain level of usage in a month, it would slow down speeds drastically. AT&T manages remaining subscribers on unlimited plans the same way. Under T-Mobile's new unlimited plans, all data would be at maximum speed.

T-Mobile's new plan will cost $5 less than a regular data plan with 5 gigabytes of full-speed data. The advantage of the limited plan is that subscribers can turn their phones into "mobile hotspots," linking tablets and computers to the Internet through the phone. That's not allowed under the unlimited plan.

T-Mobile USA and MetroPCS may have room on their networks, giving them some leeway, at least for now, in offering unlimited data.

T-Mobile has upgraded its network to higher speeds and is losing customers, in large part because it doesn't sell the iPhone.

MetroPCS, a Dallas-based cellphone company that targets low-income urban households, has nearly completed another network upgrade that enables higher data speeds, but only 8 percent of their customers can take advantage of it. The rest need new phones.

"The bottom line is they have capacity available to attract quite an influx of subscribers without pulling down the network," said Steven Crowley, an independent network engineering consultant.

T-Mobile USA is a unit of German phone company Deutsche Telekom AG and has 33.2 million subscribers. MetroPCS has 9.3 million.

LBS Marketing Spotlight: Restaurants | Street Fight

With today?s consumers always connected and always looking for convenience, it seems obvious that that restaurant owners would want to engage them on the mobile battlefront. New data from Nielsen found that 47 percent of all smartphone owners, used mobile apps Shopping/Commerce category in June. While these results are not specific to restaurants, they indicate that consumers want deals, and that they want to easily interact with businesses without having to jump through hoops.

Creating Loyalty
Restaurants that want to stay ahead of the curve need to utilize their mobile apps as a source for offering programs for loyal diners. According to the National Restaurant Association?s Restaurant Industry Forecast, 57% of adult consumers are more likely to choose restaurants that offer a loyalty rewards program. Meanwhile, 40% are using smartphones to look at menus and order take-out.

Whether you build your own app or choose to use of the vast array of mobile and location-based solutions in the marketplace, is a difficult question. ?Whatever your decision, digital menus, restaurant locators and online ordering are now the bare minimum that consumers expect. Serious thought should be given to location-based deals, group discounts, mobile payments and loyalty program integration. However, a restaurant that wants to create true loyal customers needs to integrate all of your program elements to the app as well.? Make sure you allow diners to check their point status, receive rewards and be able to store them in one place.

One innovative way example of this is Kansas City-based Front Flip. ?The company has essentially created a digital punchcard system that owner/operators can use to incent sales during slow times and reward repeat business for loyal customers.

According to CEO Scott Beckner ?Users can download Front Flip, then scan Flip Codes at participating retailers to get a virtual scratch card that offers a chance at a prize. For businesses, Front Flip offers access to customer data and helps them keep and reward customers through targeted mobile outreach.? Companies like McDonald?s, Pizza Hut, Hooters, 54th Street Grill are already using it.

Track and Target Your Best Customers
A loyalty program that?s integrated in a mobile app can track based on frequency or spend, depending on what fits your restaurant best. You can tailor personalized offerings to their app based on what you know about them from their activity. Then you can fully understand your best customers and reward them for their patronage within one centralized system.

Extending loyalty to payments
It?s not only about rewards and specials to incent customers, but increasing about making it easy to transact too. In April the TGI Fridays chain released new apps for iPhone and Android that lets customers start a tab, keep track of their bill, and pay it right from their phone. Currently, 350 of the chain?s 600 locations nationwide are now accepting the new mobile payment method.

?This new app puts the Friday experience at guests? fingertips ? whether they?re looking for the closest Friday?s to celebrate and indulge or if they want to pay their bar tab quickly,? Ricky Richardson, chief operating officer at T.G.I. Friday?s, said in a statement.

The app?s payment functionality is powered by a platform called TabbedOut, which launched earlier this year at SWSW in Austin, Texas. The app automatically integrates with Friday?s point of sale software, allowing customers to pay their bill without the need for additional hardware.

These are just a couple of examples of how restaurants can start engaging customers using mobile and hyperlocal services, but it?s clear that mobile marketing is going to be key for restaurants in the future.

Infants' avoidance of drop-off reflects specific motor ability, not fear

ScienceDaily (Aug. 21, 2012) ? Researchers have long studied infants' perceptions of safe and risky ground by observing their willingness to cross a visual cliff, a large drop-off covered with a solid glass surface. In crawling, infants grow more likely to avoid the apparent drop-off, leading researchers to conclude that they have a fear of heights. Now a new study has found that although infants learn to avoid the drop-off while crawling, this knowledge doesn't transfer to walking. This suggests that what infants learn is to perceive the limits of their ability to crawl or walk, not a generalized fear of heights. The findings have implications for infants' safety.

The study, by researchers at New York University, is published in the journal Child Development.

In the study, researchers tested about 50 children, including 12-month-old experienced crawlers, 12-month-old novice walkers, and 18-month-old experienced walkers. Caregivers encouraged the babies to descend a series of drop-offs that were safe or risky, relative to each of the infants' abilities. Instead of a visual cliff with a fixed height, researchers used an actual, adjustable cliff without safety glass with a maximum height of 90 cm; an experimenter rescued infants if they began to fall. On each trial, researchers recorded whether the infants tried to crawl or walk down the drop-off, avoided going at all, or used an alternative backing or scooting strategy.

Experienced crawlers tried to crawl down safe drop-offs within their abilities and refused to crawl down drop-offs that were too large relative to their abilities, the study found. However, novice walkers attempted to walk down impossibly large drop-offs, even the 90-cm cliff. Experienced walkers didn't try to walk down risky drop-offs, but did go down using alternative strategies, indicating that they weren't afraid of the drop-off.

"These results suggest that the classic explanation for why infants come to avoid a drop-off -- fear of heights -- is incorrect," according to Karen E. Adolph, professor of psychology and neural science at New York University, one of the study's coauthors. "Our results have important theoretical implications for the field of child development, suggesting that some of the general knowledge that infants appear to gain early in life may in fact be highly specific and tightly linked to their emerging motor abilities."

Adolph noted that the findings also have practical implications for infant safety. When designing safety provisions for young infants, she suggested, special attention should be paid to newly emerging skills as these are the times when infants can't perceive the limits of their own abilities and don't seem to distinguish safe from risky ground.

Holograms present celebs with new afterlife issues

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? When Tupac Shakur rose from the stage in the California desert earlier this year, it was not only a jaw-dropping resurrection, but also the beginning of a new form of live entertainment.

"Come with me," the digital Shakur called out, not just to tens of thousands of screaming fans but seemingly to other artists.

Follow, they will. Elvis Presley's estate announced it has authorized holograms of the King of Rock, Marilyn Monroe's estate has expressed interest and there's no shortage of other beloved stars whose fans would die to see them perform again.

Advances in digital artistry make it all possible, presenting celebrity estates with new commercial and creative opportunities, but also some ethical quandaries.

"I think we've scratched the surface with Tupac," said Dylan Brown, a filmmaker who along with director Philip Atwell and effects studio Digital Domain helped bring the Shakur hologram to life. "If it's done tastefully, like Tupac was done tastefully, I think it could be a wonderful form of entertainment."

Brown, owner of The Yard Entertainment, and Atwell, owner of Geronimo Films, had each toyed with the idea of using holograms in concerts for a decade, but the technology wasn't there. Brown, who works closely with Snoop Dogg and Atwell, who collaborates with Dr. Dre, knew that once they chose Shakur for the holographic debut, it had to be more than just a technological marvel.

"We wanted to be really respectful of the family foremost," said Atwell. "We just wanted to do something that wasn't in bad taste."

Reaction to the Shakur hologram was huge, with the performance garnering 15 million YouTube hits within 48 hours and winning a top award at the creative marketing gathering Cannes Lions.

"You start to open up a whole new universe of legal questions," said Ed Ulbrich, Chief Creative Officer of Digital Domain, which is also working on the Presley holograms. "As such, we have no intentions of doing anything other than being utterly respectful of these legends and icons."

Because it's two-dimensional, the Shakur performer isn't a true hologram, which, by definition, is a 3-D image (Ulbrich notes the technology isn't quite there for that). But it's a vivid digital creation that audiences are far more accustomed to seeing in movies ? except there is no screen.

Brown and Atwell say part of its challenge was integrating Shakur's performance into the larger show featuring Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre and others.

Shakur's entry and exit had to be carefully planned to fit into the show, with the creators opting to have his image burst apart into a cloud of gold specks. Brown and Atwell said the dissolve seemed most appropriate. "He has a mystique and that aura that kind of transcends death even," Brown said.

Stars wield extensive control over how their names, voices and images are used after they die through likeness, trademark and copyright protections, and now holograms offer them yet another consideration.

Before digital filmmaking, attorney Laura Zwicker said the question for her clients boiled down to "Could you use my photograph?" Now, they have to consider whether they'll be returned to the big screen, inserted in commercials or put back on stage, said Zwicker a strategic wealth planner in the Los Angeles office of the firm Greenberg Glusker.

Celebrity likeness rights vary around the country, with stars' estates in California enjoying 70 years of protection. Indiana offers 100 years and 16 other states have laws protecting celebrities' likenesses, said Jeremiah Reynolds, an attorney with the firm Kinsella Weitzman Iser Kump and Aldisert. The firm handles numerous intellectual property issues, including those related to Michael Jackson's estate.

While holograms are likely covered by existing laws, potential legal challenges will likely focus on whether the performance is protected by the First Amendment. "You get into very subjective areas about what is artistic," Reynolds said.

Marilyn Monroe's estate threatened legal action earlier this year against a company claiming it was working on a digital show using the model-actress' likeness. The technology for holograms or other digital performances are intriguing, the estate's handlers at Authentic Brands say, but they would only partner with people who could make a top-notch product.

Brown and Atwell said they felt enormous pressure to make sure the Shakur performance was worthy of being an introduction to a new form of live entertainment.

"I also hope that the people who do follow us do it with the same care and the same sense of dedication because I would hate to see a bad version of Marilyn Monroe, a bad version of Elvis up there," Brown said.

Brown and Atwell are proud that Shakur is leading the hologram revolution.

"We're part of the hip hop generation," Brown said. "It shows the growth of that culture, of that business and it says a lot about what we've dedicated part of our lives to."

"There was a time, 15 years ago, 20 years ago, when people were waiting for hip hop to disappear," he said. "Now not only is hip hop here to stay, even if you die we'll bring you back."

Hunt for answers in 'Top Gun' director's death

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Director Tony Scott loved fast cars, riding fast motorcycles and creating some of the most memorable action sequences of the past quarter century. He was even planning a sequel to his hit "Top Gun."

Yet on Sunday, police removed the director's body from Los Angeles Harbor hours after they say he stopped his car on the towering Vincent Thomas Bridge and jumped.

His death stunned friends and fans and left Hollywood buzzing about what could have prompted one of the industry's more successful filmmakers to take an 18-story leap to his death.

An autopsy and notes he left for loved ones will offer investigators clues, but any answers that authorities obtain will not be released for several weeks.

The bridge is a favorite filming location for action directors, although the 68-year-old Scott apparently never used it for one of his films.

The avid rock climber directed more than 15 movies that included such unforgettable sequences as the dog fights of "Top Gun" and the raw power of a runaway train in "Unstoppable."

As a director and producer, Scott worked with Hollywood's top actors, including Tom Cruise, Denzel Washington, Will Smith and Robert Redford, and helped influence a generation of action buffs.

Cruise, who starred in "Top Gun" and confirmed he was working with Scott on a sequel earlier this year, said he'd lost a dear friend.

"He was a creative visionary whose mark on film is immeasurable," Cruise wrote in a statement. "My deepest sorrow and thoughts are with his family at this time."

Notes to loved ones were found in his Scott's and at another location, Coroner's Chief of Operations Craig Harvey said. The death was being treated as a probable suicide, but a formal determination could take a month or more as toxicology and tissue tests are completed.

In the meantime, investigators will look into Scott's health and whether any other factors contributed to his death.

"The family asks that their privacy is respected at this time," said Simon Halls, a spokesman for Scott and his older brother, Oscar-winning director, Ridley Scott.

The bridge where Scott jumped has appeared in "The Fast and the Furious," ''Gone in 60 Seconds," ''Charlie's Angels" and "To Live and Die in L.A." It has been used in filming 13 times since 2011, according to the California Film Commission.

Motorist David Silva told the Los Angeles Times that Scott appeared to hesitate before climbing a fence along the bridge, and again before leaping. He said fellow motorists at first thought the director was performing an extreme sports stunt, but quickly realized he didn't have a parachute or other safety equipment.

The brothers frequently collaborated on movies, and their company also produced the successful TV series "Numb3rs" and "The Good Wife." CBS, which aired both shows, said "one of the brightest lights in the industry has gone out."

Scott, who was born in Great Britain and lived in Beverly Hills, is survived by his wife, actress Donna Scott, who appeared in several of her husband's films, and twin sons. He had been planning a sequel to "Top Gun," the movie that helped propel him to other big-budget films.

Scott often said he got his greatest thrills from filmmaking.

"The biggest edge I live on is directing. That's the most scary, dangerous thing you can do in your life," Scott said in an interview about his 1995 naval adventure "Crimson Tide." ''The scariest thing in my life is the first morning of production on all my movies. It's the fear of failing, the loss of face and a sense of guilt that everybody puts their faith in you and not coming through."

He was the first of the Scott brothers to enjoy blockbuster success with "Top Gun," the top-grossing film of 1986 at $176 million. Scott teamed with Cruise again four years later on the hit "Days of Thunder."
