NBN Co fibre in first new housing development | Ed Husic MP ...

Residents living in Bunya Estate in Sydney?s west will be the first people in a new ?broad-acre? development to enjoy the benefits of the National Broadband Network (NBN), the Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy, Senator Stephen Conroy, announced today.

Visiting stage one of the Bunya Estate near Doonside in Western Sydney ? which comprises 112 lots and dwellings and will ultimately have around 730 homes ? Senator Conroy said the residents living there would be able to receive high-speed broadband over the NBN.

?The Gillard Government understands it is important to Australia?s future that no matter where you live across the nation you can have access to our world class National Broadband Network,? Senator Conroy said,

?The NBN will provide a massive boost to Australia?s economy and bring about benefits across the community in the health, education, government services and aged care fields as well as in the workplace.

?Bunya Estate represents another significant step in the Gillard Government?s vision to deliver high-speed broadband for all Australians. It is the first new broad-acre development in which NBN Co has provided fibre connections to all its premises.

?I congratulate NBN Co on the installation of optical fibre infrastructure in its first new housing development.

?The rollout of fibre in new developments by NBN Co represents a significant investment by the Gillard Government in the community?s future infrastructure needs.?

Senator Conroy said the government recognised that new developments needed to be accommodated as well as existing premises.

?While the NBN is being rolled out, an estimated 1.9 million new premises will be built. These premises need to have ready access to quality telecommunications,? he said.

Senator Conroy, Local Member for Chifley, Mr Ed Husic and the CEO of NBN Co, Mike Quigley, were given demonstrations of digital home applications that will be available to Australians with access to the NBN.

?Local residents in the Bunya estate can receive fibre-based telephone and high speed internet services over the NBN by contacting a retail service provider of their choice. It will be the first of many such sites and our local community is very excited,? said Ed Husic, Local Member for Chifley.

The Gillard Government is also supporting the release of more affordable homes in this estate through a $7.5 million Housing Affordability Fund grant.
