MIAMI?? Former Tropical Storm Emily has dumped heavy rains in the Bahamas and is forecast to begin moving north away from the islands as a weak tropical depression.
The National Hurricane Center said at 5 a.m. EDT Sunday that Emily was about 155 miles (245 kilometers) north-northeast of Grand Bahama Island and had maximum sustained winds of 35 mph (55 kph). It was moving toward the north at 10 mph (17 kph). Forecasters said they expected the center of the tropical depression to turn toward the northeast and increase in speed Sunday, moving away from the Bahamas and the U.S. East coast.
Forecasters say little change in the storm's strength is expected in the next 24 hours.
Emily had broken apart after causing floods and damaging hundreds of homes in Haiti.
