Child care survey under way in Livingston County | The Livingston ...

Child Connect for Family Success has been asked to be the local endorser of the National Survey of Early Care and Education (NSECE) by the US Department of Health and Human Services, which awarded a contract to NORC at the University of Chicago to conduct the survey.

This study is the first comprehensive portrait of the availability of early care and education in more than 20 years. NORC will conduct four large, nationally representative surveys: households with children under 13, home-based care providers, center-based care providers, and those in the center-based provider workforce.

The information collected in this study will be an important foundation in building state and national knowledge of critical considerations and decisions families encounter in finding care. Results of the NSECE will inform the development of child care and early childhood education policies.

The study team began contacting sampled providers in late October 2011, with data collection continuing through May 2012. The survey interviewers are now in the Livingston County area and will be actively calling or stopping by to talk in-person with local providers. Our agency is encouraging childcare providers in our area to participate in this important survey.

This comprehensive study is being conducted for HHS? Office of Planning, Research, and Evaluation of the Administration for Children and Families, and will be the first comprehensive portrait of the availability of early care and education in our country in more than 20 years. The study is led by Project Director A. Rupa Datta, NORC Vice President and Senior Fellow and Principal Investigator Robert M. George, Chapin Hall Research Fellow.

The NSECE will update and greatly expand the information available on all forms of child care, the child care workforce, and families? child care needs and patterns of use. The information collected in this study will be an important foundation in building local, state and national knowledge of critical considerations and decisions families encounter in finding care. Additionally, results of the NSECE will be used to develop childcare and early childhood education policy, including policies that support provider training, education, and working conditions; and that improve families? access to care.

To capture this information, the study team will conduct four large, nationally representative surveys: households with children under 13, home-based care providers, center-based care providers, and those in the center-based provider workforce.

The NSECE is being conducted in 755 locations across all 50 states and Washington, D.C. They have sampled one or more early childhood providers within your area for participation in the NSECE. To protect the identities of sampled households and providers, the researchers are unable to provide additional information about sampled locations.

We feel fortunate that our area was chosen as one of the sampling locations and as endorsers of this study are asking for the cooperation of our county child care providers, which would be extremely helpful to ensure that the survey provides the most accurate results possible. This information will help move policy and support for early childhood education forward, helping all of our providers and the children and families they serve. More information about the survey is available at http://nsece.norc.org
