Before the National Western Stock Show & Rodeo throws open the gates on its 106th edition Saturday, Texas longhorns, cowboys, old tractors and more will take to the streets of downtown Denver.
This year's grand marshal should feel right at home during Thursday's annual parade.
Former Denver Mayor Federico Pe?a grew up in Laredo, Texas, and received his bachelor's and law degrees from the University of Texas, home of the Longhorns.
After college, he moved to Denver, where he made his famous name.
Pe?a was out of town late last week, his office said, and did not return a call for comment.
Pe?a was elected to the Colorado House of Representatives in 1979, then became Denver's

first Latino mayor in 1983 and was re-elected in 1987.He was President Bill Clinton's secretary of transportation from 1993 to 1997 and secretary of energy from 1997 to 1998.
"We feel great about honoring Federico for all he's done for our city and nation," said National Western president and chief executive Paul Andrews.
The parade begins at noon at Union Station and heads southeast on 17th Street for 14 blocks, disbanding near Broadway.
Before, during and after the parade, folks are invited to enjoy the National Western Barbecue in the atrium of the Wells Fargo Building at 1700 Broadway. Serving starts at 11:30 a.m., and the $9 price benefits 4-H International.
The fundraiser also includes Western music and a VIP Western fashion show.
The stock show, held at the 100- acre National Western Complex at Interstate 70 and Brighton Boulevard, runs daily through Jan. 22.
Friday's Denver Post will include a special section about this year's events and personalities.
Also, DenverPost.com's stock- show Web page will feature daily stories, pictures, video and updates.
