LOS ANGELES ? Long before it became reality show fodder, Betty Ford helped create the original celebrity rehab.

The center that bears her name has a legacy of rehabbing Hollywood's elite. In the process it became a household name, a punchline, but - above all - a highly respected addiction treatment center.

Since its opening in Rancho Mirage, Calif., in 1982, stars such as Elizabeth Taylor, Johnny Cash and, most recently, Lindsay Lohan have been among the more than 90,000 people who have received treatment at the center.

Taylor met one of her husbands, Larry Fortensky, while in treatment. Kelsey Grammer credited his stay there with saving his life. So too did Oscar-winner Marlee Matlin, who paid tribute to the former first lady on social networking site Twitter on Friday evening.

"She & Betty Ford Center helped me beat my addiction & she was an angel to many," Matlin wrote. Betty Ford died Friday at the nearby Eisenhower Medical Center at the age 93.

Located in the desert about two hours east of Hollywood, the Betty Ford Center is by no means the closest place offering addiction treatment. But its association with entertainment industry came from its reputation as a place where addicts - famous or not - could get top-notch care.

"One Day at a Time" actress Mackenzie Phillips, another Betty Ford alumna, wrote on the site, "RIP Betty Ford. A pioneer in treatment of addicts. We owe Mrs. Ford our gratitude and prayers. And love. She was one classy woman."

Ali McGraw, who was treated at the center in 1986, said in a statement Friday that she is grateful for what Ford has done for her.

"She changed so many of our lives with her courage and intelligence, her honesty and humility, and her deep grace," McGraw said. "Her vision impacted my own life as few people have."

Taylor's first stay at the center came in 1983 and provided another high-profile face to those struggling with addiction.

Cash soon became a patient after he broke five ribs and relapsed into abuse of painkillers. "I ended up in the Betty Ford Center for 43 days," Cash told The Associated Press in 1986. "I've had no drugs since then. It has been the best three years of my life, the most productive and the happiest."

Other musicians, including Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler and jazz singer Etta James, who battled heroin addiction, also received treatment at Betty Ford.

One of Ford's defining characteristics was her candor, and that included confronting her own addiction head-on. She revealed a longtime addiction to painkillers and alcohol 15 months after leaving the White House, and regularly welcomed new groups of patients to rehab with a speech that started, "Hello, my name's Betty Ford, and I'm an alcoholic and drug addict."

"People who get well often say, 'You saved my life,' and 'You've turned my life around,'" Ford once said. "They don't realize we merely provided the means for them to do it themselves, and that's all."

The center distinguished itself from later iterations of rehabs that catered to the wealthy, ones that resembled spas more than an environment to honestly confront one's demons. In recent years the stigma of rehab has lessened to the point that it has become fodder for reality television, with shows such as VH1's "Celebrity Rehab" and A&E's "Intervention" showing both the impact of drug abuse and offering some insight into its treatment.

But the Betty Ford Center wasn't part of the trend. Ford was fine with famous patients discussing their treatment at the center - provided they stayed sober - but the facility keeps its clients confidential.

Dr. Drew Pinsky, an addiction specialist who also hosts "Loveline" and "Celebrity Rehab," wrote in a statement to The Associated Press that Ford was a pioneer who had given a voice, and help, to millions.

"Betty's deep appreciation of the pain of addiction sufferers motivated her to simply put aside her fear of personal harm and tell her story," Pinksy wrote. "With that one gesture of courage and honesty Betty Ford swept aside an eternity of discrimination. She knew that in doing so she would give millions of addicts and especially women with addiction, the opportunity for recovery and a flourishing life."

In 1996, Grammer described to Jay Leno how his treatment at Betty Ford helped restore his joy of living. The comedian also quipped about the center's stature and its famous patients.

"When I was on my way to the Betty Ford Center, I turned to one of my friends and said, 'You know, I've finally made it. I'm going to the Betty Ford Center,'" he said.

When a judge sent Lohan to the center for three months late last year, many experts said it would be her best shot at recovery.

"There's no place that's better with chemical dependency than Betty Ford," Jeffrey C. Friedman, a substance abuse counselor at the Cottonwood Tucson center and a recovering heroin addict, said at the time.

While Ford was a pioneer, Pinsky said it is unlikely she could have forseen how much her work would be needed in the generation after the center opened its doors.

"I suspect that even Betty would not have foreseen that addiction would become the disorder of our time," Pinsky wrote, "nor that the disease would steal millions of young lives nor that her name would become synonymous with the highest standard of treatment for a disease the prejudices against which she humbly demurred."

Nigerian military says 11 Islamists killed in shootout (AFP)

KANO, Nigeria (AFP) ? Nigeria's military said on Sunday that 11 members of a radical Islamist sect were killed in a shootout the previous night, while residents claimed that civilians were shot by soldiers.

The shootout in the northeastern city of Maiduguri on Saturday night followed a bomb attack on a patrol team in which "some buildings and vehicles were destroyed," according to a military statement.

"The attack was successfully repelled...and 11 members of the sect were killed while two members of the (military task force) were injured," Colonel Victor Ebhaleme said.

However, residents of the neighbourhood where the alleged sect members carried out the attack accused soldiers of shooting innocent civilians and burning homes for suspected collusion.

The shootout with suspected members of the Boko Haram sect occurred on Saturday night. On Sunday, an explosion near a church in the town of Suleija on the outskirts of the capital Abuja killed at least two people, though the source of the explosion remained unclear.

"The soldiers went berserk and broke into homes, shooting male residents and evicting women and setting homes ablaze as a punishment for what they called connivance with Boko Haram in attacking them," one resident told AFP by phone.

"All the residents of Kalari (neighbourhood) fled the area last night after the attack for fear of harassment by the (military). The area has been cordoned off by soldiers."

"Many people were shot by soldiers who forced their ways into homes attacking people," said a woman who said she fled her home in the area.

In the statement, the military task force accused residents of the city of collaborating with Boko Haram members by allowing their premises to be used to launch attacks on security personnel.

They alleged some residents had "prior information" on the attack on Saturday.

"The public is again reminded of the implication of such collaboration as it will be dealt with appropriately," said the statement.

The sect has been blamed for a raft of shootings and bomb attacks that have intensified in recent weeks. Most of the violence has occurred in Maiduguri.

Hundreds of troops were deployed to the city recently on the orders of President Goodluck Jonathan.

While most have been predicting the death of the dollar, I have been predicting the possible death of the Euro. It is too early to know exactly how the Euro crisis will play out, but the odds are high that the Euro will not survive in its present form.
The most likely scenario for Europe, I think, could look something like this:

Over the coming months or years, Greece will be forced to break from the Euro Zone and return to the Drachma as its national currency. Greece will then allow its currency to float and seek its true market level, which would result in a major devaluation and a De facto default on creditors.

All those with loans outstanding to Greece would be forced to write down these loans, and the losses could be huge. French banks hold a lot of Greek debt and would come under heavy attack from speculators. The subsequent fall in French bank stocks (Just last week European bank stocks fell dramatically. The Bank of Scotland, one of the world's largest banks, fell 11%. The European stock markets are down eight weeks in a row, and Italy's debt has reached 100% of GDP) would then create a liquidity squeeze, much like what happened with Lehman Bros.

The world financial community would try to rally around the banking system in an effort to save it; but at a tremendous cost. Greece would no longer be able to borrow after defaulting, and the country would be forced to live on tax receipts alone. The result would be the same kind of austerity measures they've been trying to avoid?only two to three times worse. Meanwhile creditors would be licking their wounds after having taken a beating on Greek bonds. Money would again become tight in Europe as creditors pulled in their risk lending and an inevitable economic contraction set in.

As governments and creditors assessed the damage, the market would likely turn to the next weakest link, and begin to attack that country's banking system causing a furious selling off of financial stocks there, forcing yet another country to part with the Euro and reestablish their own currency substantially devalued levels. The likely candidates for this domino effect are Ireland, Portugal, even perhaps Italy and Spain.

If this is the outcome, after the smoke cleared the Euro would be represented by only the strongest, most solvent nations. Europe would be split in two, divided into a group of strong nations (the haves), and a recession torn group of financially weak nations who would then make up Europe's have-nots.

America, I believe, would only be affected indirectly by this deconstruction. The turmoil of this experience would obviously lead to a contraction in world growth, a reduced appetite for risk, and stagnation in many areas of the world. But I would not expect to see the dollar decline in this period. In fact it should rise, except possibly against an eventual new Euro. And I do not think this kind of process would lead to a major decline in growth here in America, although we could experience a technical recession. But once the readjustment process ran its course, growth would pick up once again.

The biggest change for everyone in the world, including the US, would be in the way we live. All of us would have to rely far less on credit and depend more on savings?something many today know nothing about. Higher bank capital requirements will be the standard worldwide for years to come. This is a good thing and would eventually lead us back to bank reserves more consistent with a gold standard's reserve requirements.

In the aftermath of such events the world would seek a currency it could trust; one that wouldn't be easily devalued or inflated away. In a tumultuous environment like the one I describe above, gold together with silver and other metals would have the best chance of evolving as the new currency of choice by people and businesses all over the world.

This is just one of many possible chains of events rattling around in my brain lately. The worst case scenario would be if in the middle of one of these currency and debt crises, people threw up their hands and rejected all paper money. If that happened, the entire international fiat system would quickly collapse.

Post Script:

As this goes to print a back-up plan has just been announced by France, who is owed a load of money by Greece. France will refinance Greece's debt if the austerity plan is voted down later this week, and maybe even if it isn't. The rescue package, which several of the stronger European nations will participate in, amounts to taking the 5 year notes owed by Greece and refinancing them over 30 years at substantially lower rates. This is a De facto default?creditors will not get their principle repaid as promised. This is also an indirect tax on the citizens of those nations, since it is a subsidy.

While this type of bailout is typical, and usually stops the bleeding, the problem has not been solved. The problem is that Greece is spending more than it is taking in. Every day it must borrow more money to make up the shortfall. Obviously creditors want Greece to cut spending to the level of its income and stop borrowing. But Greek citizens do not want to pay their bills by accepting less benefits and paying more taxes.

The resolution will come only if Greece balances its books, or its creditors say "enough!" Restructuring debt is merely a stop gap measure. Each and every month Greece will go back to its creditors seeking more money. The question is, when will the answer be, "no?"

What is a sense of humor? This article will briefly attempt to quantify what a sense of humor is, and ask revealing questions about a sense of humor. It will explain cultural and moral differences in senses of humor. Ultimately, the article will conclude that there is no objective sense of humor in the individual or societal or even moral sense.

For centuries and even today, a desirable quality in human beings is a sense of humor. A sense of humor is essentially a sense or feel for what is funny. But this is precisely the question. What is funny?

If something is funny, it makes you laugh. Laughter is associated with positive feelings and an overall feeling of euphoria and enjoyableness. Laughter and funnyness fall under the umbrella of humor.

?

Humor is situational. It?s all about context. In comedy, timing is everything. People can laugh at jokes, situations, images, pictures, videos. Essentially the whole scope of life can contain humor.

?

It is no secret that many people have many different senses of humor. I?m sure you?ve heard the term ?dry sense of humor.? I compare a sense of humor to personality: Some people have similar ones, but everyone?s (sense of humor, or personality) are different.

I may find things funny that you do not.

?

This leads us to something deeper: sense of humor in a cultural level. Some cultures, such as Australians, poke fun and each other and insult each other. In this culture, insults and name calling are all in fun. However, in other cultures, these insults will be taken seriously and personally. As most people know, being talked about by others in a negative light is not always pleasant, but depending on the situation and the culture, it can be a funny experience for all of the parties involved.

Sense of humor analyzed at a moral level also shows that different people and different cultures have different senses of humor. Some people laugh at other people?s misfortunes. For me personally, this is morally unacceptable. But to others, it is not. The point is that humor can also have a dark side with malice or masochistic undertones.

In the holocaust, there were accounts of using humor to survive. Even in the most hellish conditions on earth, a sense of humor was derived!

To me, the evidence is clear that there is no objective sense of humor. Everyone has a different sense of humor, while some are similar. Different cultures find different things funny, and people whose morals differ find different things funny.

There is no right or wrong answer to finding something funny. Everyone has different perceptions and everyone laughs at different things.

At least nine killed in Uttar Pradesh train accident (Reuters)

LUCKNOW (Reuters) ? At least 26 people were killed and more than 150 injured in Uttar Pradesh when nearly a dozen coaches of the Kalka Mail passenger train were derailed, officials said on Sunday, raising safety concerns in a country where 30 million people use the railways daily.

The accident occurred when the driver of the train applied emergency brakes, said A.K. Jain, additional director general of the railway police.

Jain said he feared the death toll would go up, as injured passengers were being admitted in nearby hospitals.

On July 7, at least 31 people were killed when a train rammed into a bus driving over a level crossing which did not have a gate or an attendant, typical of several such crossings in India.

Latest government data showed that 336 people were killed and 437 injured between April 2010 and mid-January 2011.

State-run monopoly Indian Railways has a patchy safety record because of ageing infrastructure.
